During WW2 the allies had an issue in one of the battles in Italy. They where getting hammered for months by the Germans. So they made up a story that the Germans where using one of the oldest Cathedrals in the area on a mountain top as an observation post for Artillery strikes. The Allies bombed the Church off the face of the earth.

Turns out that the Germans honoured their word and never used the church as an observation post at any point.
