'Wonka' Sinks 'Night Swim': Weekend Box Office Results (Jan. 5-7)
It's the first weekend of Box Office 2024 and we just got hit with 18" of snow. I was moving snow for my mother like Larry Bird.
Needless to say, that kept me away from the movies. Not that there was anything I wanted to peep. We got a new release with Night Swim, but, in the end, Wonka came out on top, again with $14.4M. That makes 3 #1 finishes in 4 weeks for The Candy Man and a $164.6M running total. With $465.8M globally, it's $9.1M away from tying Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's $474.9M.
New year, new Universal release. They were 2023's Box Office MVP and they're back with Night Swim, which opened with $12M from 3,250 theaters. Not a great start. And with only a C CinemaScore, the word of mouth ain't looking so hot. Not what Blumhouse and James Wan were hoping for. We'll see if Night Swim swims with the fishes.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom took 3rd place with $10.6M. It's reached the $100M mark, joining The Flash as the last DCEU films to achieve the feat. Aquaman should have no problem sinking The Flash's $108.1M. It's already blown The Flash outta the water with $334.8M globally so far to The Flash's $270.6M total.
Migration narrowly finished behind Aquaman 2 and took 4th place with $10.2M. The holidays have been great to Migration: it's made 4.5x its $12.4M opening weekend and is up to $77.8M. That should help ease Universal's pain with the Night Swim disappointment.
Holding down 5th place for the second week in a row was Anyone But You with $9.5M. This is another one that's shown great legs through the holidays, making 4.6x its opening $6M to total $43.7M. Its gonna pass Jennifer Lawrence's No Hard Feelings, which finished with $50.4M. The start wasn't there but the staying power has been. Up 8.5% over last week?
Notables
The Hunger Games fell outta the top ten but made $1.8M. Its up to $163.8M.
Godzilla Minus One made $1.7M and has a running total of $49.1M.
The Boy and the Heron, which was 10th last week, finished 13th with $1.7M. It's made $39.6M.
With $1.2M, Trolls Band Together had hit $100.4M. Another win for Universal.

Black Movies in the Red on MLK Weekend

And of course, the black one did the worst.
The box office can be mean that way. And wouldn't you know it, the remake of Mean Girls was number one with $28M. Sounds like a good number till you go back 20 years to the original and see that it did $24.4M in 952 fewer theaters. That's like $40.4M adjusted for inflation. It's a good thing Paramount got this out on a holiday weekend, which gets it to $32M. So it ends up making 88.9% of its $36M production budget. And just as well cuz it's rocking a B cinemascore to the original's A-. So we'll see how if these new Mean Girls can make fetch happen.
Jason Statham is back with The Beekeeper, directed by David Ayer of Suicide Squad infamy. And I'll be damned, it actually did well, with $19.1M ($16.7M 3-day). Thanks, Martin. This time last year, we had another action movie drop on MLK weekend: Gerard Butler's Plane, which did had the same B+ CinemaScore and did $11.8M. So Statham is outdoing renowned January action star, Gerard Butler, by 38.2%
After back to back weeks at number one, that Wonka reign is done. Still though, a respectable third place finish with $10.8M ($8.3M 3-day). Wonka has now made $507.7M worldwide, blowing past Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's $475.8M lifetime total. With just $15M more, it'll get the Wonka franchise to $1B in total grosses.
Anyone But You continues to do its thing with another $8.3M ($6.9M 3-day). With a $56.4M running total, it's passed No Hard Feelings' $50.4M total. I think this calls for a @N*gga Please (Wait. nikka, please?

Well, maybe just until those Madame Webb numbers hit.
Migration took fifth with $6.1M ($8.3M 4-day). It's got near-even splits with $87.8M domestic and $86.8M international running totals.
Still though, it's behind Hop's $108M total. You probably like, "what the fukk is Hop?". Had to look it up myself. It was Illumination's 2011 box office entry and their current woat performer. 
Notables
With $109.6M, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, has passed The Flash's $108.1M total. 
Guntur Kaaram was the other wide release in 800 theaters and finished in 8th place with $4.1M.
And how bout The Book of Clarence debuting in 10th place, only making only $3M?
The same B CinemaScore as Mean Girls and blown away by 90.6% on MLK weekend. 
Mattafact, The Color Purple ($2.5M) and American Fiction ($2.3M) finished in 9th and 11th place, respectively. Martin Luther King Jr. rolling over in his grave.

That seems like a solid start for Mean Girls considering the budget and the fact it was going to be a streaming movie originally.

Meet this weekend's box office.
They're the same as last weekend. Well, at least the top six are. And that's with a new wide release.
shyt, we could probably just re-rack last week's entry and call it a day. Would you even notice? 
With a punt $11.7M, Mean Girls finished #1 again and is up to $50M. That $11.7M is worse than last year's 2nd place finisher, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which made $11.8M.
The Beekeeper is doing quite well. It's $8.4M second weekend beat the $5.2M of last year's Plane, which was also in its 2nd weekend at this time. With a $31.1M running total, it's just $1M shy of grounding Plane's $32.1M final haul.
Wonka is still going strong with another $6.4M. It's like an everlasting gobstopper. With a $187.1M running total, it's just over $19M shy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's 206.4M. of course Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's total is $339.1M when adjusted for inflation.
Anyone But You continues to soar, holding down spot number 4 with $5.4M. Its $64.2M running cume is 27.4% more than No Hard Feelings' $50.4M total. It's also cracked $100.2M worldwide. Jennifer Lawrence's movie could only do $87.2M. Naked suplexes and all.
Migration was a near identical performer to Anyone But You. Both in their fifth weekends. Both playing in nearly or just over 3000 theaters and both within $100k of each other. That means Migration made $5.3M. It's almost to the $100M threshold with $94.6M. It's still the biggest illumination flop. However, technically, its $191.6M global running total has passed Hop's $188.4M. That was a close one.
Notables
New entry I.S.S. disappointed with only $3M from 2,518 theaters. It stars soon to be 33 year old Ariana DeBose, whose partner is a soon to be 53 year old white woman.
Poor Things, fresh off of 2 Golden Globe wins and 11 BAFTA nods, was released in 820 more theaters and jumped back into the top 10 with $2M.

Winter weather can't be helping the box office. Have some interest in Argyle, but if that isn't good probably won't be back in the theaters until Dune in March.

Just a bizarre movie, that one is. The budget for it is obscenely high and while 'Kingsman' was a fun time, Vaughn has been putting out some stinkers as of late. I got low faith in this one.

Trading Places at the Top: Weekend Box Office Results (Jan. 26-28)
Last weekend was a copy-paste job. This weekend saw trading places at the top of the box office. No, not the Eddie Murphy movie from 1983.
The Beekeeper stung Mean Girls to take 1st place, for now, with $7.4M. It crosses the $40M plateau with $42.2M. It also crosses $100M worldwide with $104.1M. It's also an unlikely #1 movie for Jason Statham. He had 3 movies last year. Meg 2 was never higher than when it debuted at #2. Ditto with Expend4bles. Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, which was only in theaters for 3 weeks, topped out in 7th place. Good for Statham.
Mean Girls takes 2nd place, for now, with $7.29M. It's up to $60.8M. 2004's Mean Girls made $55.4M after 3 weeks.
Last weekend's 3rd, 4th and 5th place finishers, Wonka ($5.9M), Migration ($5.1M) and Anyone But You ($4.8M), repeated this weekend. Wonka is closing in on $200M, with a $195M running total. Migration crosses the $100M mark with $101.2M. And Anyone But You passes $70M and is up to $71.1M. Enjoy it now, Sydney. That Madame Web flop is just around the corner.

Fighter was the only new wide release to finish in the top 10 with $3.6M.

With $118.1M domestically, it's made 4.2x its opening weekend. It's shown good legs in its 6 weeks.Godzilla Minus One added 1,516 theaters as it played in black and white. Its $55M running total passes Parasite's $53.3M.
After falling from top ten to not mentioned at all, The Book of Clarence made $437K as it fell all the way to 20th place. Mattafact, it was more than doubled up by Oppenheimer, which made $999K, as it added 1,008 theaters.

With Argylle, Apple's Movies Continue to Fall Far From the Tree: Weekend Box Office Results (Feb. 2-4)
Fresh on the heel of releasing the new Minority Report Precrime goggles, Apple is back with Argylle, it's third recent release. It opened in 3,605 theaters and took first place with $18M. Apple will celebrate the victory but it's a pyrrhic one. They dropped Killers of the Flower Moon in 3,628 theaters back in October. It opened in 2nd place with $23.2M. Then came Napoleon a month later, which also took 2nd place with $20.6M from 3,500 theaters. See a pattern? $23.2M
$20.6M $18M.Now you can tell me that these Apple movies are advertisements for Apple TV Plus in the same way that Disney movies are advertisements for the parks. Or you can talk about how Killers of the Flower Moon got nominated for a bunch of awards but this is the box office thread. And all three movies recently released by Apple cost $200M. You release a movie from Apple in theaters? It's going to cost $200M just like a Pixar movie would. You'd expect a better return at the box office.
Then there's the diminishing returns of the domestic totals of these Apple movies. KOTFM has made $67.7M and Napoleon has totaled $61.4M. Neither movie made 3x its opening weekend. Even if Argylle does show those kind of legs, it'll still only make $54M. And why would it show those legs? It finished with a C+ CinemaScore, a full letter grade lower than the B+ Matthew Vaughn's last offering, The King's Man got in 2021. That movie had staying power and went on to make 6.28x its miniscule $5.9M opening weekend. I think this Argylle apple is falling far from that tree though.
