In literally the 1st few sentences of the article it says that police can't chase for minor offenses.

So in other words they can still chase murderers and rapists.

The citizens asked for this though. The 13 year old latino was literally shooting at passing cars when the shot spotter technology alerted the police. Police came and chased the kid down the alley and thats when the altercation took place. You'd have to see the video yourself to determine if the shooting was justified or not.

I saw the video it's still a stupid law because based off that case they still woulda chased him, unless shooting at cars isn't considered a serious crime ?

Cities like chicago have strong police unions that circle jerk the aldermen mayor etc. so instead of enacting laws that actually would deter police shootings like the case in question, they all go get a steak dinner and hash out this nonsensical shyt which puts citizens in even more danger while absolving police from doing their actual job responsibly like chasing criminals without shooting them from behind or when their hands are up

They should've never taken away beat cops IMO. By now they could've built a long term relationship with the violence prevention networks in the community and probably got a better handle of crime over the years. But the black elected officials here see the writing on the wall. We had 30 years from the time Harold Washington died to build a black power base like Atlanta and we failed miserably. The disdain black people have for one another here is sickening. Consider all of our major music artists from Chicago had to leave here to make it big. That should tell you something.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago police officers will no longer be allowed to chase people on foot simply because they run away or they’ve committed minor offenses, the department said Tuesday, more than a year after two foot pursuits ended with officers fatally shooting a 13-year-old boy and 22-year-old man.

The new policy adheres closely to a draft policy put in place after those shootings and gives the department something it has never had: permanent rules about when officers can and can’t engage in an activity that can endanger themselves, those they’re chasing and bystanders.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said he expects the new policy will make the officers and the public safer, as has happened in other cities with similar policies.
“The impact on crime has been studied (and) we can look back at what has made officers safer, has made communities safer for over a decade,” he told reporters at a press briefing on the policy, which he expects to be in place by the end of the summer after all officers receive training.

But they will still have discretion to chase people who they’ve determined are committing or about to commit crimes that post “an obvious threat to any person.”
