NPR said there hasn’t been a male R&B superstar since Usher. Is this true?

I'm pretty sure sales has dictated the decline of R&B.... If it was selling you would see more..... Part of that probably is how creative can you be in R&B now. Giving people something they haven't heard...... That's tough.

Personalities/brands are what people are buying now.

How many got longevity and crossover appeal in not just race but age demographics, and nationalities? I think that is a sign of superstardom and what NPR is referring to.

prosper any where on earth
Chris Brown is not blackballed lol
Let me fix the #s real quick

Edit:
Usher has sold over 150 million total records sold worldwide.

Brown has sold over 217 million records worldwide

When the last time Chris brown had a major tv appearance?

Didn’t they cancel him and Ciara’s MJ award show tribute?

Where those numbers come from?

Usher has a diamond single and album

Chris brown ain’t do that.

Name a Chris brown song bigger than yeah!

And that was released before Chris brown came out.

People are saying Bruno but was killing him for stealing styles. There hasn’t been too many stars so I guess you have to insert Bruno in there when you have nobody else.

The issues with Bruno was that he was writing them love dove pop songs. I guess he is being who he truly wants to be now. Some artist do shyt to get through the door. He won album of the year and song of the year. He writes his stuff and gives his crew credit, he solid in my book.

When was his last main tv appearance or was in a movie

The #s came from Wikipedia

This last album was #1 on the R&B charts

"11:11 was released Nov. 10, 2023, via Chris Brown Entertainment/RCA Records. 11:11 debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart and No. 9 on the Billboard 200."

He's also just announced a tour from that same album.

His last movie I think was in 2022 and he was also on Blackish.

He was also just nominated for a Grammy.

"Eleven solo albums into his career, Chris Brown received his 22nd nomination at the 2024 Grammy Awards with “Summer Too Hot,” the lead single from his freshly-released album 11:11. It’s up for Best R&B Performance."

"He was also nominated for Best R&B Album – Breezy (Deluxe), 2023"

He's been doing just fine.

If by R&B superstar meaning their following is primarily from their R&B related music then I would say yes. A majority of the acts mentioned have ventured off into other genres. Bruno was always pop who did old school "soul" album, Weeknd hasn't left synth pop in years. Ty Dolla, no. Derulo, don't make me laugh. Miguel is a name that could've been it but he just didn't release enough to stay around. Chris Brown is an interesting case because he's really done it all except have that ONE album or song that stood above the rest. I know he records a ton and a few of his afrobeat songs have caught on but he doesn't really have that one that people could point their finger to.
