NPR said there hasn’t been a male R&B superstar since Usher. Is this true?

Posting 2 reviews doesn't dispute what I said, but that's also irrelevant because he does not have 5 Grammys

He was nominated for 5, all 5 as a featured artist. He won 0.
So I'm arguing against a lie

I disagree, "Pop" isn't a genre of music......it just means music that charts in the top 40/billboard top 100 (no one is going to argue that Motown wasn't R&B simply because they weren't as earthy/bluesy sounding as Stax); so with that being said, in the modern R&B sense:

Timberlake
Weeknd
Bruno Mars

..all 3 are R&B-based

Chris Brown
NeYo

..not as big as the first 3

I have other responses to my quotes. I said in them Chris Brown would have been better off filling the pop lane because of his talents. Comparing his vocal skills and discography to the other great R&B artists from the 70s, 80s, and 90s...CB cant sit nowhere near those top tiers. The fusion of hiphop and r&b got alot of yall mfers fooled on actual R&B skills and songs.

That’s more a function of our changing society. The music always reflects society and our lifestyle. Jodeci was not out here ‘Oooooh girl, be in trouble if I left you noooow’ :heh:

So Chris brown’s approach reflects how we interact with women and what women respond to.

But the amount that he’s diverged is overblown. To again use Jodeci, Diary of a mad band is a fukin classic. Feenin, Cry for you, all these traditional R&b songs——SINGLES—-but the full album is full of rappity rap R&B that by your logic would not be classified as R&b.

So yea most R&B artists can dibble and dabble styles. But Chris brown is R&B. I question if people actually listen to albums. X is like his magnum opus to me and its mostly straight up R&B

I like how people act like Chris Brown beating Rihanna took away his talent. He was never that good to begin with. If his music was good enough people would ignore his controversial behavior. He has zero undisputed classic albums. Stop blaming cancel culture. He beat Rihanna in like 2008. Cancel culture didn’t really become a thing until 2016-2017.

Usher is the last true R&B superstar. The people who came after him either fumbled their momentum or aren’t good/popular enough.

It’s sad how both rap and R&B are lacking true stars in the new generation (2020-now).

His controversial behavior does get ignored for the most part. That man beat up one of the biggest pop stars of all time. The fact he still tours and puts out music and does all star basketball game appearances etc is a miracle

Which is exactly my point. People acting like the powers that be hindered Chris. He was still promoted as a mainstream artist. He released bloated albums that sound the same. Still has a great career but he isn’t a tier 1 artist to me.

Both things are true though and the bloated albums came well after.

So you don't even consider usher to be an R&B superstar....why not?
He's definitely an r&b superstar. I just think R Kelly was the last true one because he stuck to it when Usher decided to go pop. R Kelly 2010 album love letter is :wow:. This is at the same time when alot of r&b acts started chasing that edm techno crowd.

You said vocal skills “and discography”, lil bytch

Chris brown’s content/production is the only conversation. Vocals?! He can sing well enough. That’s not the deciding metric for superstar r&b anyway.
