They didn't really do anything special for her return though. Xia was laid out (which they could just say was Io later) & Regal is about the most balanced GM character they've ever used in terms of never really leaning too much in any direction had to get somebody who hasn't already had a qualifying match yet. Would have been better if they went to break & came back with Io though to give the illusion that they had to scramble to find someone.

Aliyah being a heel doesn't really matter either, Candice wrestled Kayden Carter after & their both faces

Io never stopped getting cheered anyway, that's wrestling now, people cheer for whoever entertains them face or heel 95% of the time. Jericho is the top heel in AEW & the crowd sings along with his theme song

The match right before Io vs Aliyah was heel (Grimes) vs heel (Nese)

The Dusty Classic did that a few times this year. They've kind of ignored it if it's leading to a bigger match & they need to figure out how to get there. Io taking Xia's spot to get in the ladder match & Xia getting in the last chance match later as just an extra body is the better option here than taking out Candice/Kayden & where that puts them.
