New Mexico's economy is a fraction of the size of New York City's. If they can enact universal childcare โ and relieve working families of a crushing cost burden โ surely we can too. It's just a question of political will. https://19thnews.org/2025/09/new-mexico-first-state-free-child-care/

New Mexican here if we can do it, you can do it. We also have great healthcare insurance for everyone, regardless of whether youโre working or not. Thank you, Governor Grisham.

But we're second in oil production, so there's potentially a lot of revenue to alleviate poverty.
When this was first enacted in 2019, it was available only to the poor. Now the income test has been eliminated.
That secures the support of the rich.

As a New Mexican, I'm proud of what our little, poor state does. Our governor has done so much to improve our educational system, raising teacher salaries, protected us throughout Covid, and now supports free ongoing Covid vaccines. I wish all states did as much for their citizens.

SO happy to have moved from NE to NM even though my child is a teen. I am ELATED at the idea of my tax dollars feeding (all school lunch and breakfast is free for NM kids) and caring for kids vs giving tax breaks to corps or trillions more to the military industrial complex.

isetthebouncybear.bsky.social
All of this. We benefited from free DD preschool for our oldest. Our youngest is in pre-k now. On top of free meals while in school (even over the summer!), our school (donโt know about others) also has free school supplies. This is what my tax dollars to go to.

Part of the program allow for pay raises to pre-k teachers. I know at least at our school, the teachers deserve it. I hope they expand it to all teachers.

I'm happy it's got no income cap. Public goods should be public to all. One of the biggest failures of American liberalism is deciding that government help is only meant for the destitute.

loganlaurice.bsky.social
Yes! Thatโs such an important point โ making it universal removes the stigma and actually helps everyone. Why do you think itโs been so hard for the U.S. to embrace public goods for all, like other countries do?
