Dave Portnoy considers moving Barstool Sports over Mamdani win — 'hate the guy'

KiMi Robinson

4–5 minutes

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy's scathing criticism of Zohran Mamdani is getting renewed attention in the wake of Mamdani's mayoral win in New York City.

Answering a viewer's question during an Oct. 25 YouTube livestream about whether he could "please" close Barstool's New York City office in the event of Mamdani's win, Portnoy replied, "Honestly, I've given that a lot of thought. He's definitely going to win."

The 48-year-old, who's frequently been critical of Democrats, mulled over possibly moving his media company to neighboring New Jersey.

"Going to Hoboken or, like, Jersey City or something? I don't want to ... have an office (there). But we have all those people who that (messes) up their life just because I hate the guy," he said. "It's a catch-22. I may close the New York office ... because I can't stand the thought of Mamdani running ... New York City. I can't stand it. But a part of me is like, how much of it will actually change?"

Portnoy voted to "take a principled stand," saying, "I told our finance guy to start looking around for property, no joke."

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy said he considered relocating his headquarters from Manhattan if Zohran Mamdani, right, were to win the New York City mayoral election.

He then continued to disparage Mamdani: "Thirty-something-year-old communist running New York City, has never had a job in his life, hates America — doesn't seem like the best."

The 34-year-old state assemblyman from Queens decisively won over New Yorkers during the Nov. 4 election. A self-described democratic socialist who shot to stardom in recent years, Mamdani will be the city's first Muslim mayor and the first Asian American mayor (he was born in Uganda to parents who'd emigrated from India).

Despite being labeled as a communist by Republican figures like President Donald Trump, Mamdani has denied subscribing to communism. Speaking with CNN in June, he confirmed he has "many critiques of capitalism."

He added, "the definition for me of why I call myself a democratic socialist is the words of Dr. King decades ago. He said, call it democracy or call it democratic socialism. There must be a better distribution of wealth for all of god’s children in this country."

'He is a communist. I am a capitalist'

Portnoy clarified to The Daily Mail on Nov. 6 that Mamdani's vow to tax the wealthiest New Yorkers is not his only gripe with the mayor-elect.

"The taxes is the least of it for me. He is a communist. I am a capitalist," he said. "I think wanting to be successful and rich is a positive quality. He thinks it makes you evil. I think hard work should be rewarded. He wants everybody to get a trophy."

In a 2022 TikTok video, Portnoy said he'd purchased property in Miami "to save money because I make hundreds of millions" of dollars. following Mamdani's win, Portnoy wrote, "If this is what the people of NYC want (then) so be it. Thank god I don’t live there anymore."

Speaking with USA TODAY earlier this year, Jared Walczak, vice president of state projects at the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, said Mamdani's proposed 2% tax increase is a flat rate on all income earned by a wealthy New Yorker, "down to their first dollar." It would raise the top tax rate in the city from roughly 3.9% to 5.9%.

At that rate, high earners "would be paying more in city taxes in New York than they would be paying in state taxes in most states," Walczak said.

Often critical of the Democratic Party, Portnoy cast his vote for Trump in the 2024 election. Speaking with NPR's "Morning Edition" in June, Portnoy clarified that his choice was more "an indictment of the Democrats than an endorsement of Trump's politics."

Mamdani's platform focused heavily on affordability, with the mayor-elect promising to freeze rent increases on rent-stabilized apartments, make buses free, launch city-run grocery stores in each borough and enact universal child care. He also pushed to increase the minimum wage, build 200,000 new affordable housing units and create a community safety department to shift certain emergency calls, such as mental health crises, away from police.

To achieve his priorities, he has pushed for tax increases on corporations and the city’s wealthiest 1%, but that would require approval from state lawmakers and Gov. Kathy Hochul, who has said she opposes raising taxes. Hochul did, however, endorse Mamdani after he won the Democratic nomination.

Gotta read my breh... They are relocating their HEADQUARTERS.. their base...their corporate location/mailing address. Of course their actual restaurant locations will stay put. But once they move their HQ, they will be able to file as a Florida corp, not a NY corp.

yes I understand, their NY locations will still pay NY taxes. :manny:

This moment says everything about why Zohran Mamdani won.

A journalist in a wheelchair asked about accessibility and Mamdani didn’t talk down to him, didn’t deflect, didn’t politicize it. He listened.

Politicians listen best right before elections and forget fastest right after. 📉

Let’s hope this isn’t just another PR moment in empathy clothing.

This bum is already asking for donations for his “transition” :mjlol: Transition2025.com

This is why I have no faith the system.

It’s one thing to be downright hateful (but disingenuous) and another to be just so susceptible to the disingenuous hateful people (ie stupid).

1. Zohran actually followed the rules.
2. When Zohran hit his cap - he made videos and announcements telling people to stop donating - when have you ever seen a politician do that.

Now let’s step to where we are

- Now that he is Mayor-Elect, he needs to fund his transition. EVERYBODY does this.
- Can you think about why you don’t hear this? Because 100% of the time, they are QUIETLY FUNDED by corporate donors, special interest groups and lobbyists. Most of these people also break the law by using money from their general election.
- Zohran doesn’t take money from any of the above.

God help us all from disinformation and stupidity.

@CityLimitsNews

As of Nov. 30, according to a disclosure statement produced by the transition team, Eric Adams had raised $993,478 from around 530 donors, including nearly 150 from outside New York City.

Eric Adams’ transition committee has brought in nearly $2 million

The mayor has until April 30 to spend it on an inauguration ceremony – or give the money back.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams raised almost $2 million to host his inauguration at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. Then the party got postponed indefinitely due to rising cases of COVID-19 in New York City, but the New York City Campaign Finance Board now says Adams has until the end of April to spend that money.

Adams’ transition committee raised $952,659 in the first three weeks of December, keeping pace with the $988,478 that he brought in the first month after being elected. That $1.94 million total slightly trails the $2.08 million that former Mayor Bill de Blasio raised in 2013 ahead of his first inauguration.

Can Eric Adams really hire his brother?

Is this nonprofit responsible for Eric Adams’ primary win?

Major donors in the past month include real estate developers MaryAnne Gilmartin and Abby Elbaum and hedge fund managers Paul Tudor Jones and John Paulson. Isaac Ash, the founder of clothing company United Legwear & Apparel Co., and cosmetics heir and conservative donor Ron Lauder all gave the maximum allowable donation of $5,100. Ash and Lauder were major donors to Common Sense NYC, a super PAC focused on electing politically moderate New York City Council members.

A report detailing the transition committee’s activities from Dec. 1 and Dec. 31 was due the Campaign Finance Board on Jan. 7, but the details haven’t been previously reported.

While it raised nearly $2 million, Adams’ transition committee spent just $394,861 through Dec. 31. Most of that spending was on staff salaries for people involved with the transition and hiring in the Adams administration. Katie Moore, Adams’ campaign manager who was recently hired by Red Horse Strategies, has been paid $28,000. The consulting firm owned by Tiffany Raspberry, who has been hired as senior adviser for external affairs in City Hall, was paid $23,000. The mayor himself was reimbursed by the transition committee in three separate payments totaling $1,952.80, labeled as “advance repayment.”

The committee has also refunded $80,786 to donors, many of which seemed to be triggered by individual donors trying to give more than the $5,100 limit. But more refunds may be coming. City campaign finance law normally requires “Transition & Inauguration Entities” to be zeroed out by Jan. 31, and remaining money can be returned to donors. But that’s been extended to April 30 “due to health and logistical considerations caused by COVID-19,” according to guidance on the board’s website. It noted that the extended deadline applies only to inauguration spending, not transition matters. And candidates are reminded they’re only allowed to have only one inaugural event – “whether you hold it before January 31st or April 30th.”

That leaves Adams with $1,466,259 to spend on a rescheduled inauguration event. Sources close to Adams say the committee intends to still hold an inauguration event, but details about a time and location haven’t been set yet.

Adams’ committee didn’t report accepting any donations after Dec. 20, and the vast majority of the money, all but $2,225, came in by Dec. 15. Adams canceled a series of fundraisers in mid-December – including one with controversial public relations maven Ronn Torossian – with the explanation that he’d already raised enough money.

“The transition’s fundraising effort in November was extremely successful, bringing in enough donations to pay for both the inauguration and staff to help prepare the mayor-elect’s administration to hit the ground running on Day 1,” transition committee spokesperson Evan Thies told The New York Times in December.

I went to Amazon to see *how* bad the AI slop was using the search query, "Zohran Mamdani Book".

Tell me why the FIRST result was for an anti-Muslim book by the guy who runs the website "Jihad Watch"?
