before they tear it down to build a new Penn Station.

Madison Square Garden is an iconic sports venue and the home to many memorable NBA moments, but a recent decision by the New York City Council means that MSG will soon have to find a new home. The owners of Madison Square Garden were seeking an extension in perpetuity to the special operating license at its current location, but the Council voted to extend the license for only 10 years. MSG will be forced to move to a new location as city officials move forward with plans to build a new Penn Station. The decision has been described as "an eviction notice of sorts" for MSG by Charles V. Bagli of The New York Times.

Madison Square Garden has moved locations four times since it opened in 1879, but the current home of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers has lasted at its present spot for 45 years. When news of plans to rebuild Penn Station broke in 2008, James Dolan and the Madison Square Garden Company announced a $1 billion renovation project for MSG, which is expected to be complete in the fall of 2013. Madison Square Garden Company stock fell 1.5 percent on Wednesday, but the official vote on the extension of the permit apparently didn't come until after the closing bell.

I guess the city really is under new management.

the renovations make absolutely no sense now....but I wonder if this is why MSG/Dolan were so against the West Side Stadium. That is really the only spot where they could keep MSG in Manhattan.

Brush up on yours. Read the OP.

I don't need to. MSG, the Knicks, and Rangers are all owned by the Dolans. As the article stated, MSG has moved 4 times in the past, so when it moves again, the Knicks and Rangers will still play in MSG, regardless of the geographical location.

Here's the whole story. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/25/nyregion/madison-square-garden-is-told-to-move.html?_r=0

Anyway, for those who haven't been to Madison Square Garden or Penn Station, Penn Station is a huge train station and serves as a hub/end point for three commuter rail services (Long Island Rail Road, Metro North, and NJ Transit), Amtrak, and is a NY subway stop (34th Street and 8th Avenue). It's a huge underground maze, but there are plenty of signs around. You can connect to it from almost anywhere. You go to Grand Central Station which has more subway connection points and then connect from Grand Central Station to Penn Station, or walk from 42nd street down to 34th if you feel like catching some non-fresh city air.
To redo the Penn Station is nuts. So I can see why they want to demolish Madison Square Garden. It makes it easier to access the underground for construction.
I think MSG should hold its events temporarily elsewhere and then rebuild MSG above Penn Station again. It would suck, but other professional sports teams have played at a temporary arena.

Welp :russ:

The renovations had to be done but they won't be able to pay those off without taking a hit if they have to move in 10 years. I went to MSG before the makeover and it was :scusthov:

This seems like politics to piss of the Dolens after the west side stadium ordeal. The dolens have enough money and influence to fight this, and they ain't going anywhere after spending so much money to renovate the current garden

Dolans were ready to Move 5 years ago, the City wasn't having none of that.

They'll get another 10 years on top of the 10 years they already have.
