In 97? Vol 1 wasn't certified platinum until February of 99. After Vol 2. dropped.
But with two gold albums Jay was definitely on another level.
But he got that push with the Nutty Professor soundtrack on RD and then singles with Babyface with full on sell out videos

I liked his first album a lot. Still never heard JOE, but I thought that was supposed to be the one.
fact: tragedy was meant to be on Dangerous..he recorded a sick sick verse but was removed..

jewelz though is a personal classic..one complaint I have about it is was a little disjointed...it didn't flow like word..life which I think is a true classic

the title is my opinion, thats not the articles phrasing. i like Word, but it aged a bit as the years went on. outside of 2-3 tracks this could come out today and be amazing. plus his pen was still great, O is the a top 10 songwriter in hiphop

bought this album at least twice. that said... jewelz might be a personal classic. but i dont think you can call it an outright classic. if i remember right the response to "far from yours" was not positive, and a lot of people weren't feeling the new direction in comparison to word... life. personally, i've always liked it more than word... life, but i dont think it's the better album overall. not even close. i just like OC on this type of production more, even with the misses throughout the album.
