I love Jewelz

People who weren’t around back then don’t realize how divided rap was between the mainstream and independent/underground wheter it was between fans or rappers

If you had one rnb hook on your album in the 90’s you were considered a sellout

jewelz is one of the best balanced albums from the golden era.

i hold it in the same class as iww, rd and r2d.

thats not an easy balance to achieve. among others mic g tried w/ vendetta and as skilled as mic g was, he couldnt achieve that balance and preserve quality the same.

The thing is, some artists bought into that and painted themselves into a corner. When they tried to expand their audiences, fans pointed out some of the contradictions.

Gangstarr, for example, received pushback from fans when they had Kci and JoJo sing on Royalty

I’m shocked OC went awol for awhile after that

I thought he was gonna be around for awhile on the mainstream after Jewelz because as you said he found that balance between keeping it true to yourself and core audience at the same time making big records for mass appeal to sell some records
