Obama already conceded the public option behind closed doors with insurance industry executives and lobbyists before he ever made a public pitch for healthcare reform.

He wanted the individual mandate. That way he could keep the insurance industry happy while avoiding ruffling Republican feathers and get a few Republican votes so he could brag about being bipartisan and pragmatic...or so he thought. Just like he gutted the stimulus and made it 40% tax cuts just so he could say he got Olympia Snowe, Arlen Spector and Susan Collins vote.
