They had 60 votes in theory. Remember, there were two senators who were sick/hospitalized and unable to serve - so that's 2 votes down. One who's seat was being held up because of a legal battle - that's a 3rd vote down. Ignoring all that, they still had to contend with the blue dog coalition in the 3 months where they had a majority. It's why the public option died in the senate even though it passed in the house with overwhelming support.

hes saying purity tests, basically if you think a public servant shouldnt take big money lets say or you should support single payer if youre a democrat or the base wont support you, hes calling that a purity test which is really just a standard. then he makes a legitimate point about people being overly woke online and thinking that just making posts or calling out peoples language online changes anything. those are two separate issues. hes completely right on one and completely wrong on the other. hes lumping them together so people say oh yeah good point and then dont have any standards and vote for a biden type

Yeah, I agree about them being two separate issues. But I think using the term 'purity test' might be setting off an alarm for progressives he wasn't trying to ring. He does have a point when saying 'the world is messy' and you might have to work with people you don't completely agree with to get big stuff done. That is also a good point. The judgement and canceling of people over transgressions even offline is counter productive. Yes, hold people accountable for their bad actions but once that has been done try and move forward working together. That's what it takes to get big difficult things done. I may be wrong but I think that's what he was getting at, using the phrase purity test was a mistake.
