CNN —

Former President Barack Obama issued a call to action for Democrats at a private fundraiser in New Jersey on Friday evening, urging those frustrated by the state of the country under President Donald Trump to “stand up for the things that you think are right.”

“I think it’s going to require a little bit less navel-gazing and a little less whining and being in fetal positions. And it’s going to require Democrats to just toughen up,” Obama said at the fundraiser, according to excerpts of his remarks exclusively obtained by CNN.

“You know, don’t tell me you’re a Democrat, but you’re kind of disappointed right now, so you’re not doing anything. No, now is exactly the time that you get in there and do something,” he said. “Don’t say that you care deeply about free speech and then you’re quiet. No, you stand up for free speech when it’s hard. When somebody says something that you don’t like, but you still say, ‘You know what, that person has the right to speak.’ … What’s needed now is courage.”

I have to agree with Obama:mjgrin:. The Democrats need to toughen up and stop whining, just look at the Democratic shills on TheColi......The only thing the Democrat shills do on TheColi is whine and cry to the mods, and try to get people banned. The Democrats lost big to Donald Trump, and if the Democrats keep it up you will lose again to the GOP. #NoTangiblesNoVote

The Democrats are looking like Roland Martin:

Losing to Trump two times has literally handicapped them even though Trump’s idiotic “Blazing Saddles” approach so far to governance has given them MULTIPLE opportunities to claw some credibility back..they fail to capitalize. God help them if midterms come back lukewarm for them

Losing to Trump two times as the incumbent party for President should be the flashing “red lights” that should tell them they need to revise party policies but I doubt they’ll do this.

They have become the Republican Party as it was in the 90’s after the first Bush’s do nothing presidency.

Obama scolding white people like he regularly does to black people lol.

In some ways I agree dems need to grow some balls. I'm stunned there isn't nearly as much mass revolt right now, especially with Trump floundering from one mistake to another. But part of growing balls is about governing, and right now a lot of cities and states run by dems aren't doing shyt to help people. Give the Midwest governors credit - Walz, Whitmer, and Pritzker are all successful because they've gotten things done; you can add Shapiro to that list, although he's not in the Midwest. But when large segments of the population are in NY and CA, two states with obscene costs, that regularly become national pinatas for democrats it hurts everyone. And there's a guy running for mayor in NY who is very popular but can't get support from establishment dems because of the another problem...Israel.

Dems need to focus on basic issues that make things better. Housing, rent, healthcare, etc. Trump is going to ensure dems win the house next year regardless. But there needs to be a clear plan in place - and clear winners/losers poised to run for president - when that happens.

Anyone else wish retired Democrats would stay out of the spotlight?

Every Republican president, after they are president you don't hear from them again.

But Dems, they always wanna create foundations or some company and stay in the spotlight.
Obama, the Clintons etc...

Anyhow Obama made sure all Democrats running got out and endorsed Biden as an attack to Bernie.
If Obama didn't do that you would probably have Bernie as President right now.

No we wouldn't. A decade of this shyt and nobody on the Bernie side can explain how he was going to win the dem nomination without the south. You can't win the GOP nom without the south (white Evangelicals) and you can't win the dem nom without the south (black voters). That's why he lost to Hillary and it's why he was going to lose to Biden regardless.
