That friend shyt is true. Last year, I had to drop my close male friends. They kept bringing up my accomplishments and saying that I think I'm better than them. I said no, YOU keep bringing it up not me. They tried to tear me down something serious but I'm still standing. I let them go. Close to 25 years of friendship gone down the drain.

Also, that 2nd line is becoming true for me. I really want to find a man who owns a business so that I can assist him with that.

Damn man, sounds more like jealousy than anything. That sucks. I can honestly say my childhoods homies are still true. Having them nikkaz show up to my graduation probably meant more to me than anything. While I don't approve of some of their fukkery, I don't judge them either.

Sorry to hear that though. I hate hearing shyt about havin to cut nikkaz loose.

I'm not successful by any means but I did very well with all the non tax money I got from my deployments.

I started taking classes thru OUs program for military personnel way back in 2004. Didn't know where the fukk I was going with this shyt. Just figured it was smart to take some college classes.

Here I am ten years later in my last year of residency at UT Dental in Houston. Most of my counterparts finish in 7 or 8 years. The deployments got me finishing in over 11.

I'm going to copy and paste your stuff @Mr Hate Coffee . Hopefully this shyt helps me when I'm completely licensed.

What year did you graduate? I know a bunch of folks there...

2007
Why'd ya'll niggs do IE tho? :what:

Just curious...

I started off Comp Engineering then got humbled in my first programming class. :wow:

IE was the best balance of being an engineer but having some interaction with people. lol. Plus I'm naturally good at process improvement.

I actually love my job but I've grown tired of the location. I"m also tired of being an executor and want to go into strategy. So I'm bout to go to business school. I got accepted to Duke, Cornell, and Northwestern. Still trying to pick one.

I'm 30 now but I was 28 when I typed all of this. I was going thru some old notes and figured I'd share. My views haven't changed a bit tho.

Yo, I'm an IE from A&M that's going to graduate this May :blessed:. Breh, what would you say were the more valuable skills or concepts you learned as an undergrad? Skills(like excel, programming) you use on a daily basis or IE concepts that drive most of your work. I got average grades, didn't really learn s**t :skip:,so I feel kinda dumb going into the corporate world :patrice:

Life is good. I got an engineering degree from a top school, I make good money, and am on the verge of making even more. Here are the observations of a young nikka that made it. Mr. Hate Coffee is by no means an expert on life, take it for what you will.

Observations from a "Successful" Black Male

-It's going to be hard to keep the same friends. People will resent you for life decisions they made. Be a stand up guy no matter what tho.

-Even women that make more than you will expect you to pay for the dates.

-No matter how well you're doing, the harsh reality that your high school friends and your immediate family ARE NOT doing well keeps you from being completely free.

-Women want a man with a good job and career, but get mad at you when you're heavily involved with said career and don't have a lot of free time. :what:

-Meeting other young blacks who have money and ambitions changed my whole life. If anyone is stuck in a rut, I suggest you change your friendship circle. It can open your mind.

-Money isn't everything. I had the most stress in my life when I made my most money.

-Nothing turns you into :flabbynsick: faster than working a desk job.

-White people have different rules when it comes to snitching. Don't tell em shyt. I've seen guys at work stab each other in the back repeatedly and go out for beers and play golf afterwards. I still don't understand this.

-Getting a new job/promotion/degree isn't really going to make you happy. Especially if you're not passionate about your work.

-Owning a house was overrated. Way more upkeep and headaches than I realized. If I could do it again, I'd cop a cheap place to live in and then rent out.

-Our generation is royally getting screwed. All that "Follow Your Dreams" stuff we grew up on has fukked a lot of 20 somethings up. And they're bitter about it.

-Don't assume that someone at work is cool cuz they're black. It's an amazing amount of Toms in the work world.

-Never talk politics or religion with coworkers. Even outside of work.

-You can go back to the hood, but don't get caught up in hood drama.

-Success is relative. There will always be someone younger with more accolades to make you feel like you could do better.

-People from your past will come to you for money. Dont' feel bad saying NO. Just cuz I got bread and no kids doesn't mean I don't have my own problems.

-Journey > the destination. College was harder and I was broke but it was more fulfilling.

-Most women I went to school with were high achievers and very driven. But once they got into the corporate world they realized that having a job is boring and secretly wish someone with more money would come and make them a housewife.

-Generation Y females tend to be ridiculously entitled and will hop from job to job until they find one that makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The truth is, this job doesn't exist for most of us. So they resign to the point above.

-Adults are the most delusional people in this world. The older I get, the harder it is to be honest with folks. You have to manage people's twisted perception of themselves. It keeps the riff raff down.
-Young blacks are some of the most creative people in the world yet incredibility limited at the same time. :ohhh:

-Everybody settles. EVERYBODY. Whether it be on a job or a mate. We all settle. At least I'm honest with myself.
-Chicks be using the shyt out of me. Luckily I see it coming. I get asked to be someone's date to a wedding every other month. So demonic.

-Whenever someone asks what you're doing at a specific time or date, ALWAYS tell them you're doing something important. More often than not they want a favor.
Elite post. Elite fukking post. I am jacking this my brotha. :salute: Rep, dapped, and five starred.

Japan, but from the 989
Excellent thread. I guess I'll add one little gem about work that I have noticed.

Never come to work in something new and if you do, come in something that is moderately priced. Work car vs Personal Car. Work clothes vs Personal Clothes. I do this shyt like I'm Bruce Wayne. Old white folks and c00ns at work will notice immediately if you are making too much money.

Show no fear. Deal with most problems honestly, but never react immediately. I have a rule on deal with problems. 20 mins max. I have a temper so when a problem occurs I sit down for twenty mins and write out my solutions. Then I stop thinking about it. Then about an hour later I come back to the problem looking for solutions. It might sound crazy but I do this all the time with huge problems. Anger clouds the mind.

When you start making money or people perceive that you are making money people start to form an impression of you that is wildly different than who you really are. That goes for friends and family.

good post. not everyone is in the corporate world, but if i can add a few more comments for the coli fam who are climbing the corporate ladder of success...

- never turn down opportunities for more responsibility or leadership. even if it doesn't translate to immediate increase in compensation take it. then establish a time frame to review your performance with the new responsibilities (3-6 months) and initiate a discussion to request compensation in line with your expanded role.

- don't be afraid to ask for more money even if your responsibilities haven't changed. if you know you're good at what you do and your performance supports it, ask for more compensation or a enhanced benefit/bonus/commission package. if you don't ask you can't receive. ambition is admired.

- if you can't be on time, be early. consistency and dependability is key in a corporate environment. slackers get left behind or cut from the team.

- if you know there's a problem, try to have a solution before you complain. people who are part of the solution are remembered in a positive light. the whiner is remembered as part of the problem.

- never try to one up your boss. try to relate your success to the leadership you receive (even if they don't deserve it). if your boss or the company is able to be more successful because of you they'll reciprocate because they need you and you give them credit.

- once you reach a leadership position, remember the qualities and effort that got you there. acknowledge and mentor others that show the same qualities. you benefit from the success of others too.

:salute:Excellent list. We need to do more of this, sharing valuable information on our experiences.

I'd like to add a few of my observations too...

- Cacs try to turn any type of disagreement between you as you being "threatening" so dont argue with words, argue with results

- Try to become an independent contractor or consultant in your field of work ASAP. Only way to get paid what your worth and not have to do busy work.

- Dont become complacent, i've seen people waste 20+ years of their life doing the same thing. It's easy to get trapped in a job and lose years of your life.

- The best way to get in good with your boss is not kissing ass or trying to be a superstar. Be the one your boss never has to worry about.

- Dont loan money to friends / family. If you really want to help them, give them the money on the condition they never ask again.

- It's easier to say no the second time if you said no the first time. It's hard as hell to tell someone no if you said yes in the past.
