His contract runs out after the season anyway. They need to shake up the roster a bit.

Also, the front office didn't do anything to address the defense in the offseason and to the surprise of no one, it's still trash. Their goaltending has been subpar too, which kept them afloat in years past. Demko's been really disappointing.
