I'd love to hear Holmes' take on this. Personally I have no issue with trading up a few spots to get your guy if that place is established. Most great GMs have done that. We just saw Howie Roseman trade up for Jihaad Campbell for instance. Lions wise, we traded up a few spots for Brian Branch a couple years ago. Undeniably a good move. And I think we'll look at the Terrion Arnold and Tate Ratledge trade ups similarly in a couple years. But trading up significantly for project players, or development players...just feels like a waste of resources. Also seems like teams can basically punk you into making bad picks this way, by convincing you that they're going to overdraft a player so you overdraft them first.
I like TeSlaa, like I said earlier. And I'll let the guy who scouted Cooper Kupp and St Brown call his shot. But personally I would have just stayed at 102, and traded back if he got drafted. The Stanford receiver didn't get drafted until the 130s, and we know the Lions liked him. Trading back 10-12 spots, getting another 5th or 6th round pick, and then drafting Elic Ayomanor would have made perfect sense.
