The argument seems to be that the other guys we have can replicate Smith's production in the aggregate without spending a lot of money. Muhammad's limited snaps (without playing next to Hutch) suggests he can put up similar numbers. We'll see.

People are exaggerating how much Johnson leaving will effect the offense I think this team will be right around the top of the nfc again with the return of Hutch (comeback player of the year lock) no expectations this year will help since that’s where they thrive best just hope Goff doesn’t mess it up again- I’ll get off his back though since his time under center is nearing its closure

That’s just who Holmes is. He’s more about discovering his own guys than making the splashy free agent signing. Smith coming back was realistically never on the table.

I wouldn't have done it for 9mil. But apparently the contract is incentive laden with the highest being 9mil but it's unlikely he hits that. So yea I would have signed him here. Do I think there are guys on this team (besides Hutch/Davenport) who could provide what Smith offers (40-45 pressures, 6-9 sacks)? Yea. We'll see who is wrong.

Pretty clear Holmes wants to penny pinch at as many positions he can afford to while preparing to re-sign a bunch of guys next year. If there are catastrophic injuries this season they'll spend and trade, but until then...this is what we got. Honestly I don't have major concerns about the d-line. My concern is Graham Glasgow at center.

That doesn't have anything to do with signing Za'Darius for this season.

What you're saying also makes it even more infuriating that Holmes didn't go all-in this year or last. They will not be able to keep everyone.

Holmes obviously has more faith in Davenport, Pascal, Muhammad. Holmes has been one of the best in the business since he got here. Lets See what happens with a healthy squad before we freak out over a pass rusher entering his 12th season

It’s the principalities. His unwillingness to go all in on anything may leave this team is a position where they’re great but never get over the hump. Maybe they don’t need Smith to win it all but I’d rather have too much than not enough.

He’s had a major injury and is a known knucklehead. Better get that guaranteed money before something else happens. Got deal around what D Smith and Higgins got
