Even before Trump, no one liked Ted Cruz in the Senate. Though I will admit, he did have the most leverage to win the Nomination. Then before Ted knew what was going on, Trump said that his father was in on the JFK Assassination and not only did Trump overtake Cruz, but you can make a case that Cruz's career was destroyed by Trump.If it wasn't for Trump, Cruz would have won the GOP nomination in 2016.

Ted Cruz was unpopular within the Senate because he was essentially the politician-version of Donald Trump. Cruz is corrupt, slimy and based his entire Senate career on attacking President Obama. He shutdown the government in 2013 for no other reason than to "stick it" to Obama. Cruz was the King of the Culture Wars.
Trump came around, amplified the culture war battle times a million and stole Cruz's thunder. Cruz is a Rethuglican he had no choice but to become a bootlicker for Trump or else he would lose re-election.
