Cleaning up what mess? Al Davis left behind back to back 8-8 teams...that could have made the playoffs. That's was something to build on. There was no reason why the current regime had to gut the team the way they did. We "improved" to back to back 4-12 seasons. DHB signed with the Steelers.
Al Davis reached for a lot of guys in the early rounds of the draft but his late round draft picks have always been solid.
I'll start at the top.
lol @ "what mess". 5 head coaches ranging from Art Shell to Tom Cable within the span of 7 seasons. Al's meddlesome ways kept any respectable coach from wanting to coach here. Thanks for Art Shell part deux

something to build on was keeping Tom Cable after HIS 8-8 season rather than "gutting" the staff and bringing in a QB Coach who brought Kyle Boller with him and made no improvement to Cable's 8-8 record. Hue's 8-8 season should have been a 10 win season if not for his blunder in thinking Kyle Boller was a capable backup, not too mention paying a king's ransom for a retired player who obviously quit on the Bengals.

A new regime needs to clean house and do it with their players especially when this team severely lacked talent. There is no incentive in keeping the "golden" players that Al allowed to get away with whatever they wanted.
Nobody wants to give Reggie credit for being able to keep McFadden on the cheap. Retaining Marcel Reece who's the heart and soul of this team. Keeping Tyvon after he took over and being severely cap strapped. Lastly bringing back Woody to where it all started so he can go to Canton with the team where it all started. $49MM in dead money in 2013... i bet that's Reggie's fault when it was actually the result of Al giving money to the wrong people in the form of signing bonuses. DHB has hands of stones, can't run a crisp route to save his life. I been saying this and Andrew Luck proved me right. Rolando McClain had no business covering Megatron. He's not even in the league anymore.
Where are these "solid" late round picks Al Davis drafted at? None of them except Tyvon are still on this team. Houston didn't want to come back unless the Raiders severely overpaid. Veldheer fired his original agent in favor of his brother and coincidentally, the re-signing talks stopped. Blame Veldheer's brother for that.
Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders All-Time Draft History - Pro-Football-Reference.com Here's a link of the past drafts. Where are these solid late round picks? I don't see any pro bowlers or maybe i'm just blind. Shane Lechler in the 5th round is no find, that's considered reaching for a punter.
I'm willing to give some rope to the new regime because I long wanted to be rooting for an organization that had structure. If they have another 4-12 or worse season, I will be the first to agree they should go. But I will not forget how well Reggie setup the next Regime with the salary cap and malcontent clearing McKenzie accomplished.
You just continue to shyt on the team bu bu bu but you call it like you see it.
