See this is what I'm talking about. You have to know what's gonna happen 10 seconds ahead of time.

If I'm going to look down at a text, I'm first going to scan the road. Is there a car in front of me? Is there a safe distance between us? How fast is that car going in relation to my speed? What are the cars to my left and right doing? Do either of them look like they may want to abruptly jump into my lane?

All of these things need to be calculated. But most people neglect this stuff.

:rudy: if you got to ask all those questions, you might as well call the person or just wait until you're done driving

Son, learn from me, just don't' do it. I know you Dale Earnhardt when you be whipping the Prius and all, but you might not be on point one day and get caught slipping.

Back in the mid 90s, there was this exhibit at the science museum where researchers were trying to investigate the common claim by people in accidents that they "didn't see" the very large object that they hit; or that it "came out of nowhere." The crux of their presentation was putting a picture on the screen (this was in a movie theater-type setting, with a screen that large). It was a picture of a large planes wing, with a huge engine on it. They then flashed a blank screen for a second and put the picture back on the screen to see if we could recognize what was missing. No one could tell that the big ass engine had been removed. They had to repeat the experiment several times for a few people to catch it, and finally they did it once without the blank screen and everybody got it immediately. Their conclusion was that looking down to change the radio station or do something else could cause most people to miss, even large, details. Texting is much worse. (I wish I was good with photoshop, I've been trying to recreate that experiment for years).

I'm a great driver too. Not gonna lie, I text and drive, and I do all the things you mentioned (as a part of normal driving, not just when texting) but I haven't disillusioned myself into thinking it's not unsafe. We've just been lucky. And the truth is, the odds are on our side (especially when practicing good driving habits), but when the 1% event happens, who cares what the odds are?

But the thing is, if I'm slipping then I'm slipping. That's bad news regardless of whether I'm texting or not.

Texting isn't the only thing that causes accidents. And that's why I don't slip.

I learned my lesson years ago when a cat ran a red light and banged me out the frame. I know I'm good behind the wheel but I HAVE to stay focused when I drive because of everybody else. That's why your caught slipping warning doesn't make a lot of sense to me. As long as I'm driving, I'm focused. I'm simply able to incorporate something like texting into driving like using a turn signal, adjusting the AC or occasionally looking up in my rear view.

I feel you. And that 1% is a good number because it's more realistic to me. When people send me emails about text and drive accidents and 2 sentences in you find out it's a 16 year old chick on prom night I'm like :rudy:.

But I do believe there's an art to it. I shouldn't be saying this though because I don't want people to try this stuff. Most people simply aren't good drivers.

So again, I COSIGN THIS THREAD. At least as it relates to yall...

I dont text and drive. I took too many defensive driving classes. It can wait. Or I can just call you. You have to pay attention out here. You never know when some debris from a truck might be flying at your windshield at lightning speed, or some rubber from a tire pops in the middle of the road.
