Birmingham, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference unveiled its men’s basketball coaches’ postseason awards Tuesday to cap off another exciting season of SEC basketball.
Florida’s Billy Donovan earned SEC Coach of the Year honors while Florida senior Scottie Wilbekin was selected the SEC Player of the Year by the league’s coaches. Florida’s Patric Young earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Kentucky’s Julius Randle took home SEC Freshman of the Year and Florida’s Dorian Finney-Smith was tabbed SEC Sixth Man of the Year.
This is the second consecutive SEC Coach of the Year honor for Donovan, who led the Gators to an SEC record 18 wins in league play and a 29-2 overall record. The Gators earned their fifth SEC championship under his direction and the sixth in school history.
Wilbekin averages 12.9 points, 3.9 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals while usually guarding the opposition’s top perimeter player. Wilbekin becomes the second Gator in the last four seasons to earn SEC Player of the Year honors, joining Chandler Parsons in 2011.
Young earned the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for the third consecutive year, sporting a 3.38 grade-point average in Telecommunications. This year the senior from Jacksonville, Fla., added SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors to his accolades after averaging 10.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
Finney-Smith comes off the bench to average 9.4 points and team-high 6.9 rebounds for the top-ranked Gators.
First-team and second-team All-SEC honorees, All-Freshman team, All-Defensive team, along with Player, Coach and Freshman, Defensive Player, 6th Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year were chosen by the league’s 14 coaches. Ties were not broken.
