That's not a bad speculation. The NK sends a splinter force to Winterfell next episode which #StarkSet mops up while he heads straight to the capital. Would be third time that trick is played on this show.

Would explain why the battle of Winterfell happens so early too

thats pretty much the plot youtube comments / speculation videos have been running with for awhile .. makes sense but the war been around before that three eyed raven

another speculation thats pretty popular is that Night King been playing chess this entire time, and basically been setting this up to get a dragon and invade south for awhile and that it was no accident Dany and them flew there and no accident that he was prepared.. That the night king used visions vs Bran / actions vs Jon Snow to lure Dany and her 3 dragons to save Jon Snow and thats why he was prepared to kill the Dragon easily and also had equipment ready built and ready to pull to drag the dragon out the water

He basically traded a wight for a dragon

That's a significant distinction. The war was not won at that point, hell it's still not won. They shouldn't have been expected to become turncoats simply cuz they lost a battle. Obviously what he did to Shireen was too far and despicable, but they were giving Stannis shyt for burning the lords on Dragonstone who refused to submit to Stannis' new red way. Now they acting like death by fire is perfectly reasonable for the disobedient.

It’s basically what Stannis did to Mance when he refused to kneel and enlist the wildlings in Stannis’ battle against the Boltons. Conversely, Jon spared the Wildings when they refused to kneel and they ended up fighting on his behalf in the battle of the b*stards.
