Yup. Orange County specifically, which is where Matt is from I think, was a Republican stronghold until the 2010s.
It's still got heavy Republican strongholds, there's just been democratic gains in certain regions of the county. Newport Beach, Yorba Linda, and San Clemente are stil like 70% conservative. Huntington Beach, Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel aren't as bad but still very conservative.
But the biggest cities bordering Los Angeles (Santa Ana, Anaheim, Tustin) have started to be taken over by Latinos and young white/asian liberals and that's pushing the county more liberal overall. Even Irvine is basically split now.
