The Oscar-nominated Brit had to mask his accent to play the Arkansas-born-and-bred president, who became embroiled in controversy after admitting to having an affair with Lewinsky. His casting may seem like a left field choice at first, but with hair-and-makeup magic, the actor can be transformed into Clinton’s spitting image. “The idea of recreating the real footage or archival footage really was the hook for me,” Owen told Vanity Fair of the role. “There’s something about a challenge that always excites me when it feels dangerous.”

The 28-year-old Booksmart star plays Lewinsky, the White House intern at the heart of the scandal. (Lewinsky has since become an anti-bullying activist and a Vanity Fair contributor.) Lewinsky herself is also a producer on Impeachment: American Crime Story, which means Feldstein already has her blessing: “I’m just beyond honored and I’m very excited,” she told Vanity Fair in 2019.

If it’s a Ryan Murphy joint, you know Paulson is involved. The actor, who’s starred in just about every Murphy series of note, plays Linda Tripp, the U.S. civil servant who was Lewinsky’s confidant—before handing over recordings of calls with Lewinsky to independent counsel Kenneth Starr. Paulson, who has a different physical build than Tripp had, gained weight for the role. “I don’t feel like it would be a great idea for me to come to work putting on some kind of faux suit and just all mucked up and not being able to move my face nor feel the feelings that she [Tripp] might have been feeling,” Paulson told People.

The Tony-winning Broadway star made her entry into the Murphyverse with a small recurring role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace, playing Elizabeth Cote, one of Andrew Cunanan’s friends. This time around she’ll make a more pivotal turn as Paula Jones, the Arkansas state employee who sued Clinton for sexual harassment in 1994—a watershed suit that foreshadowed the explosive Lewinsky scandal. Jones and Clinton ultimately reached an out-of-court settlement four years later.

The comedian, who’s starred in two seasons of American Horror Story, plays Matt Drudge, founder of the eponymous online aggregator Drudge Report. Drudge was the first person to break the news about the Lewinsky cheating scandal, securing his place as a popular conservative source. Eichner himself confirmed his part in the series in the most Eichner way possible: in a since-deleted tweet linking to a Fox News article that reported the casting but used a photo of the wrong actor. “That’s not me you fukking idiots,” he wrote. “Great fact checking as always!”

Following turns in Murphy’s The Politician and The Assassination of Gianni Versace, Light takes on the role of a “conservative feminist.” When Paula Jones sued Clinton for sexual harassment in 1994, Carpenter-McMillan became her spokesperson and headed Jones’s legal fund.
