Israel is aiming to degrade Iran’s ability to launch missiles
Reporting from Amman, Jordan
Al Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned in Israel and the occupied West Bank.
Overnight Sunday into the early hours of Monday, the Israeli military says it is now targeting surface to surface missile locations in Iran.
The ambition of the Israelis is to degrade the ability of the Iranians to launch those ballistic missiles. Israel says that it has been striking the infrastructure of the Quds Force, the IRGC, the Iranian military in Tehran and numerous weapons production sites as well.
The Israelis don’t say how many Iranian ballistic missiles get through its defense systems. Most of them are successfully intercepted. Israel has its Iron Dome system. It also has its air force and some ballistic missiles are intercepted by the Jordanian military when they enter Jordanian airspace as well.
Clearly, a few are getting through, as we’ve seen from the pictures of the destruction in high for the fires and high for the destruction of the residential buildings in Tel Aviv.
But Israel considers it military information they need to keep under wraps by not revealing exactly how many missiles get through. But there is also military censorship in Israel.
So if any sites such as military sites or strategically important sites are hit, then that is not allowed to report that sort of information, but clearly the ballistic missiles that are getting through the few of them are causing significant damage, and there are casualties.
