Israel launches major attack on Iran, putting the region on the brink of war. Here's what you need to know

From CNN's Rob Picheta
The Middle East is hanging on the cusp of a generational conflict Friday, after Israel launched an unprecedented attack on Iran, killing three of its most powerful men and striking locations key to its nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that the operation — whose scale already stands alone in history — is not over.

But Iran’s retaliation has begun. Tehran has fired more than 100 drones toward Israeli territory, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which said Israeli defenses were working to intercept the drones.

Here’s what you need to know.

  • An unprecedented attack: Israel used 200 fighter jets to hit Iran, dropping more than 330 “various munitions” and striking more than 100 targets across the country, the IDF said. The attack is ongoing, with a military source telling CNN earlier, “This is not a one-day attack.”
  • Key figures killed: Several of the most important men in Iran’s military and its nuclear program were killed, including the commander-in-chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, and a close aide to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Top nuclear scientists were also targeted, dealing a potentially major blow to the country’s nuclear program and its chain of command.
  • Nuclear sites targeted: Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facility, Natanz, was damaged in Israel’s attack on Friday, the Iranian atomic energy agency said. The site houses thousands of centrifuges, used to enrich uranium for nuclear energy. But no increase in radiation levels has been observed there, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said, and other key, well-fortified nuclear sites were not hit.
  • New strikes on Friday: Iranian state media said a fresh Israeli attack targeted the northwestern city of Tabriz on Friday morning, showing a large plume of smoke rising after an explosion. Tasnim news agency said Tabriz Airport was “currently under heavy Israeli attack.”
  • Iran strikes back: Israel has started to shoot down Iranian drones heading toward the country, an IDF official said. Israel has declared a state of emergency, closing schools, banning social gatherings and advising against non-essential work. The Israeli military is calling up “tens of thousands” of soldiers to prepare for what comes next. Much of the airspace above the Middle East has been closed.
  • Trump warns Tehran: In a post on Truth Social early Friday morning, US President Donald Trump told Iran to agree to a nuclear deal “before there is nothing left,” and warned that subsequent Israeli attacks on the country will be “even more brutal.” The US had been hopeful of a deal being reached earlier this week, but Friday’s attacks make that prospect seem suddenly more distant.

Israeli strikes ongoing in Iran, state media say, with reports key nuclear site again hit

From CNN’s Mostafa Salem
Israeli strikes are ongoing in Iran, targeting several cities across the nation, state-run media said.

Iranian state television and state-affiliated media said the Natanz nuclear site was struck in a missile attack.

The outskirts of the cities of Tabriz and Shiraz were also targeted in what state television called “an aggressive attack”

CNN has reached out to the Israeli military for comment.

Why Iran’s hardened nuclear facilities are so difficult to destroy

From CNN’s Chris Lau
Iran has spent years strengthening its nuclear structures against the threat of military strikes, which will make it difficult to comprehensively destroy them, military experts have told CNN.

“The type of concrete that (the Iranians) use is actually a very specialized, hardened concrete,” CNN military analyst Cedric Leighton said. It’s unclear whether Israel’s bombs can penetrate that type of concrete, he said.

“The Israelis would have to mount waves and waves of attacks,” he explained.

Some facilities are buried underground to put them out of reach of Israel’s weapons.

Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute in Washington, DC, said, for example, Iran’s Fordow nuclear site is buried half a mile deep.

“I don’t think we have seen any evidence in these attacks that the Israelis actually have the capacity,” he said.

Alex Plitsas, senior fellow at Atlantic Council, said Tehran’s underground nuclear facilities were connected to tunnels with 90-degree turns, adding another layer of complexity.

“Cruise missiles can’t do a 90-degree turn … so the options are limited,” he said.

Israel was planning on attacking no matter how the talks with the United States went...

They were planning this shyt and I'm confident Trump and them knew WHILE they were in the room even.

Israel’s Mossad smuggled weapons into Iran ahead of Friday strikes, Israeli security official says

From CNN’s Tamar Michaelis and Nadeen Ebrahim
Israel’s Mossad spy agency smuggled weapons into Iran ahead of Friday’s strikes that were used to target its defenses from within, according to an Israeli security official.

The official said that “a base for launching explosive drones was established inside Iran and that the drones were activated during Friday’s attack to target missile launchers at a base near Tehran.”

Israel had also “smuggled precision weapons into central Iran and positioned them near surface-to-air missile systems,” the official said, adding that Israel also deployed strike systems on vehicles.

Israel struck at the heart of Iran’s nuclear, missile and military complex early Friday, in an unprecedented attack that killed several of Iran’s most powerful figures and plunged the wider Middle East into dangerous new territory.

The US green-lighted this shyt.

Not solid proof but if they were already preparing to attack BEFORE the talks were through...

Yeah, like I said and the reports have stated how close they are to finishing their weapon. They’re at the final stages.

This is why Israel is desperate to destroy it and why they either have to drop the nuke or go for a ground invasion. I don’t think they have the capacity as no bunker buster in the world’s arsenal can travel half a mile deep. Even multiple waves of them would take a long ass time to do so and now that air defenses are alert that’s going to be tougher.

It’s too late in the game and they’ll have a bomb soon.

Iranian president asks people to trust Iran’s leadership after Israeli attack

From CNN’s Mostafa Salem
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian urged the Iranian people to remain unified and trust Iran’s leadership after Israel struck the nation in an unprecedented attack on Friday.

“I ask the entire nation to maintain their unity… at the same time to trust the officials,” Pezeshkian said.
“The nation needs unity… more than ever,” he added.

Meanwhile, crowds of protesters rallied in Tehran on Friday, calling for retaliation against Israeli strikes on Iran.

Israeli military says country needs to prepare for "prolonged operation"

From CNN’s Tamar Michaelis and Nadeen Ebrahim
Israel must prepare for “a prolonged operation,” Israeli military spokesperson, Effie Defrin, told reporters on Friday.
“We will continue operating until the war’s objectives are reached,” Defrin said, referring to tensions with Iran as well as Israel’s war in Gaza.

The spokesperson said that Israel is preparing for a response from Iran.

“We know they’re preparing for a response and to fire at us,” he said.

Defrin added that most Iranian drones fired in retaliation toward Israel Friday were intercepted.
