Macron and Pezeshkian speak on the phone​

French President Emmanuel Macron has said he received a call from his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian.
During the discussion, Macron said he and Pezeshkian agreed to “accelerate” nuclear negotiations between European powers and Iran.
“I am demanding: Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons, and it is up to it to provide every assurance that its intentions are peaceful,” Macron said in a social media post.
“I am convinced that there is a way out of the war and to avoid greater dangers.”
Pezeshkian has repeatedly said Iran does not plan to develop nuclear weapons but will pursue its right to nuclear energy and research.

Israel’s army praises ‘amazing achievements’ in attack on Iran​

The Israeli military’s chief spokesman, Brigadier-General Effie Defrin, says the army has been told by Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Eyal Zamir to be prepared for a “prolonged campaign” to destroy Iranian targets.
These include nuclear sites, enrichment facilities and missile infrastructure, said Defrin.
“We are deepening our strikes night after night, and we have amazing achievements,” he said. “We will continue until the threat is removed.”

What we know about the Quds Force​

Israel claimed to have killed two commanders in Iran’s elite Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in strikes overnight.

The Israeli military said it has “eliminated” Behnam Shahriyari, who was reportedly responsible for weapons transfers from Iran to its proxies across the Middle East. The Israel Defense Forces earlier said it killed Saeed Izadi, who is sanctioned by the United States and, according to the UK government, is the head of the Palestine branch of the Quds Force.

More about the force: The Quds (Jerusalem) Force is an arm of the IRGC responsible for operations outside Iran and is tasked with coordinating with allied militant groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.

The IRGC was established in the aftermath of the country’s revolution in 1979 and reports directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Since the October 7 attacks in 2023, Israeli government officials have sought to emphasize Hamas’ ties to Iran. At the time, the US said Iran was surprised by the October 7 attacks and that the US did not have direct evidence linking Iran to the planning and execution of the assault. Both Israel and the US have said Iran is broadly culpable because of its historic support for the group.

In 2020, Qasem Soleimani — head of the Quds Force at the time since 1998 — was killed by a US airstrike ordered by President Donald Trump at Baghdad International Airport.

The US designated the IRGC a foreign terrorist organization in 2019.
