Though to be fair, the "mind control" aspect of Stranger Things is ripping off Lovcraftian ideas.

Not to mention the Mind Flayer reference in "Stranger Things" is a monster from Dungeons & Dragons.....which is based on the Cthulhu Mythos by Lovecraft.
