The movie largely isn't good, and it's almost all because of Levinson. The script just isn't any good, and he sticks JDW with all of this loud, meandering, and pretentious dialogue.

This movie is EXHAUSTING. There are ways to make a good movie with a couple just talking. The Before Sunset movies are all about two people walking and talking and they're all classics. Hell, the movie that came out last month with Hathaway and Ejiofor had more believable dialogue than this.

anyway, black & white cinematography will always get props from me...when they're shot well, they're just so

I share some of the complaints about the dialogue but for me it encompasses what I've seen in recent years with film & tv...writers taking online forum talk and applying it to real life. This movie wasn't heavy with movie/tv references like other stuff can be (& even if it were, Malc being a filmmaker would make those references make sense) but these monologues man but the dialogue was great when it stuck too the relationship and didn't veer into Levinson's critique of critics and the culture at large. Gonna have to track down Virginia Wolfe and watch that now seeing that it influenced this. Nothing to be said about JDW/Zendaya...both excellent tho I think Zendaya was more natural but she was playing the calm Yin to JDW over the top Yang.

Overall, I'd say this was 3/5...also
