I agree it is going overboard to say CBB>NBA, but it's also going overboard to say this is the worst College season ever which is simply not the case. But because nostalgia is so strong, it clouds judgement.

Committee knows exactly what it's doing. The tournament is fixed to make money off of naive gamblers, generate ad revenue with popular markets in the tournament.
More often these upsets mean more money for sportsbooks. Remember, March Madness is the most popular gambling event in the world next to the Super Bowl

There's no event like it though, the only thing comparable is football Sundays. The quality of play is severely lacking but when we get a night like tonight it's like a football Sunday where every game is coming down the wire.
