Kendrick was already a star and had the biggest year in music the year before, culminating in a hit album with hit records that were still dominating the chart as of February. There's a Dave Free interview from a few weeks ago about how they deliberately decided not to just do hits to go against the grain. And it worked but at the same time, they still played the current hits (Not Like Us, Luther, TV Off). I don't think it's a comparable situation because Kendrick is a dominant figure in his commercial prime.
Nas would be doing it the same way Jay, Prince, Rolling Stones, etc would do it: as a legacy artist running through hits.
