I’m not sure if it’s the exact reason but brehs was mad because AZ didn’t choose Nas over Jay Z on drink champs :mjlol:

It’s really not that serious.
It is to me.. Like I said previously

NORE is the only one who rides with Nas to the fullest outside of Jungle. And thats a fuhkin shame

You cant choose between a nygga that gave you a career and any other rapper? Its fuhking insane

Bleek would choose Jay over Jesus and I love that about him

I wouldn’t say nore completely because he made excuses for Jim jones. Beef with nore and nas started cuz nas felt nore was siding with the roc and not repping the way he should have. I think one of the few that would really ride out to the fullest is ghostface who ain’t even from queens but got that much love and respect..

Is it possible that It Was Written dropping the same day as the De La Soul album that came out that year is the real reason purists hated it?

I remember an article where Just Blaze said July 2, 1996 is the day that split the underground and mainstream Hip Hop. Not sure if its accurate, but he pointed to Nas and De La dropping on that day as the split.

I heard nothing wrong with IWW, but I could see purists hating it because of "Street Dreams", Lauryn Hill singing on "If I Ruled The World" (and they probably hated how blatantly The Trackmasters sampled Whodini's "Friends"). There's a Dr. Dre track, only one Premo track with L.E.S. being the only other producer returning from Illmatic.

I completely forgot i said what I said about AZ. So let me explain it to everyone who commented.

This has nothing to do with Jay and Nas. I stan for both, both my top 2 all time.

This has everything to do with loyalty, No one in Jay’s close circle would ever pick any artist or album over Jay. Jay has never put AZ on a song, on a tour or anything. So it’s kinda fukked up to not pick Nas over Jay on drink champs or illmatic over ready to die.

Now if it was an OG from BK they asked AZ about, then Im okay with him saying BDK over Nas, or how havoc said LL over Nas.

I felt the same about rae and ghost when they didn’t pick. It has nothing to do with Nas/Jay. it has to do with loyalty

I based it off the recordings I've heard from that year so I'll take the L. However I assume you agree with me that "real rap" nerds did not like that album, compared to everyone else?

As a "real rap nerd" or whatever that means I bought the CD and me and my boys all sat and listened to to it front to back. No one thought it was wack just uneven which was disappointing coming off a flawless album.

It was unanimous that we didn't like Watch Dem nikkas and the Dre joint. I still say the album would be stonger with both gone.

Street Dreams and Black Girl Lost we liked but there was definitely a commercial lean to both songs which after Illmatic was uncomfortable. Crossing over was still frowned upon but post Ready to Die listening to It Was Written for the first time felt like everyone was going to move towards trying to go platinum.

Then you had the issue of checking the liner notes and not seeing Q Tip, Pete Rock or Premier not having multiple songs. Trackmasters were not regarded that highly and their production was seen as soft so breaking up the Dream Team was a major disappointment.

The album definitely grew on us but there were skips and Illmatic had none. I don't rate it as highly as Illmatic and just assume that people who do either weren't from NYC, weren't around at the time both were released, or heard album 2 before 1.

Ghost and Rae is the funny one too. Because every interview, they will say Nas is the 🐐, even scarface, he’s said multiple times Nas is the 🐐, but on drinks champs they all panick lol. But the face one doesn’t bother me as much as ghost, rae and AZ.

It isn’t that serious, brehs are crying about a drink champs game :mjlol:

They are killing it together on tour at the moment so it’s not that deep to get wound up about.

If it makes you feel better, AZ kept it neutral for majority of what was asked :yeshrug:

Or maybe he prefers Jay over Nas & didn’t want to say anything out of respect, it’s nothing wrong with that.

Jay/Bleek grew up together before rap, you can’t compare their relationship to Nas/AZ.

Why is it funny that rappers answered a question about rappers differently than you would? Wasn't Ghost on Def Jam when Jay was president lol. So he's had business with both lol. So what does it have to do with loyalty? It's preference. Same with Rae and even AZ. Lets not forget AZ is from Brooklyn and had a hit record before Nas.

I expect Clark Kent (RIP) to say Jay. I expect Guru to say Jay. Similarly I expect Large Pro to say Nas. We're talking about people who weren't (primarily) rappers who played integral roles in the start of major rappers' careers. That's 100% different than asking a rapper which rapper he prefers.

They’re all compromised due to their pockets I feel, you know who’s actually had a relationship with Jay who picked Nas? Will Smith, someone who doesn’t need to play politics.
