The list without Nas is irrelevant. Nas absolutely belongs AND he belongs in the top ten.

Drake uses ghostwriters, he doesn’t belong anywhere NEAR a top writing list.

Common deserves a slot in a top 30 list and on the R&B side i’d argue for Maxwell.

Nas is arguably the greatest writer of our time truth be told. It was American living artist so Drake wouldn’t have been on there anyways. Putting young thug over Nas in a writers list would have had me break every chair and table in that boardroom .

Young Thug is on that list. And there’s other people on that list who used writers. If that’s the case he absolutely does. And Cole not being on that list as well is WILD af. Only rapper out of them 3 that belong is Kendrick? Hell nah. fukk Drake but Cole should DEF be on there. Excluding Nicki is wild af too she’s literally the only female hip hop superstar that writes her shyt. ESPECIALLY considering this is a New York publication.

The issue with this list in particular is that there doesn’t seem to be any particular criteria other than the artist is still living. Having Young Thug and Jay-Z on the same list of GREATEST WRITERS in American music is insanity. I’d be offended if I were Jay-Z. Jay has freestyled better songs than bars written across an entire Thug album. And then Randy Newman on the same list as STEVIE WONDER?!?! Stevie Wonder is probably THE greatest American songwriter of the century. Randy Newman doesn’t compare to no damn Stevie. Its a mess of a list.

The list is dirt. But like I said. Nicki objectively belongs on the list based on her stature and the fact that she writes. Rhapsody is dope but doesn’t have as many accomplishments or the level of influence as a writer as someone like Nicki. If that’s the case I would be fighting for someone like Roc Marci to be on the list but I know better. At this point there’s more dope artists NOT on the list than there are on it.
