You really can't guarantee anything unless you have seen it.
Elizabeth Olsen's character also is hanging with his best friend and getting introduced to Josh Brolin by him. Her charcter is also encouraging him to search for his daughter and clear his name in this trailer. That also wasn't in the original movie. Seems they are fleshing out that getting revenge is a choice not the logical next step after his release.

That would be the logical thing to do if the villain is trying to set him up. Keep in mind he ain't seen his best friend in 20 years, who knows what his motives are. And honestly that's an extremely minor change compared to 90% of the trailer being damn near a shot-by-shot remake.

The only thing is it is not a shot for shot remake. I don't remember an umbrella marking the years he was in jail or him emerging from captivity in a field, or him cutting the prison guy with a box cutter. Your 90% figure is incorrect.

I dunno if you're a Spike Lee stan or what, but the shyt in the trailer that was taken directly from the original movie far outweighs the new shyt. How you could sit there like :yeshrug: "I don't see it", I have no idea. Re-watch "Oldboy", then get back to me.

Matter of fact, critics are already :whoa: about the remake because it's so similar to the original:

Spike Lee’s OLDBOY Trailer… Looks Familiar | CHUD.com

Spike Lee's Oldboy Trailer Looks A Whole Lot Like The Original - CinemaBlend.com

It's not just that the plot, about a man mysteriously imprisoned for 20 years and teaming up with a young woman for answers, looks identical. It's that the style is so similar, from the design of the most significant rooms-- the jail cell, the apartment from the end-- to the cinematography itself. I haven't seen Park's Oldboy in years, but this trailer immediately reminds me of it. Which you'd think would be exactly what Lee would want to avoid in remaking a film so rabidly loved by so many.

At the moment in the trailer when you see Brolin grab a hammer, you realize that Lee and distributor Film District are actively trying to remind you of the best parts of the original Oldboy-- who isn't familiar with the iconic corridor fight?-- and they're apparently hoping that you'll want to see essentially the same movie, just in English and with familiar actors.

‘Oldboy’: Red-band trailer for Spike Lee redo recalls shocking original | Hero Complex – movies, comics, pop culture – Los Angeles Times

The red-band trailer for Spike Lee’s remake of “Oldboy” is out, and it suggests that the director’s new film might hew closely to Park Chan-wook’s dizzying, disturbing 2003 original.

etc etc etc.

Take your own advice. You said shot for shot and that's obviously not true. The differences already pointed out make it more untrue going forward because they will have to be hashed out. Thus for making for different scenes/characters etc.

I think Spike bit off more he could chew... Remaking a movie that is already perfect is extremely lofty. I liked the actor in No Country though :manny:

Spike probably would have been better off basing his material off of the Manga and doing his own version as opposed to remaking a film from 10 years ago...

I really don't like them remaking this. I wish americans could be more open minded and just watch original classics from where they were made. But of course reading subtitles is too hard for people.
