I’ll leave it with this, Teddy has broken every promise and finessed on the go for 6 seasons, and still managed to get Cissy and Franklin to believe him (until 20 seconds before his death when he confessed because he thought Cissy wasnt a threat)
He would undoubtedly done the exact same finessing and lying on that phone call

The money was Franklin’s way “out” and into a legitimate life as a black millionaire. Metaphorically speaking it also was a representation of the “Payoff” for all the nefarious things he’d done over the years. Knowingly distributing an addictive drug to his community. Killing Kevin. Killing Rob. Killing Mel’s father. Turning a blind eye to Teddy killing his father. Jerome’s death.
ALL of it was for the money. Without that money it all would’ve been for nothing and Franklin wouldn’t have been able to live with himself.
