Few directors balance high drama, violence and comedy better than Scorsese.

Pacino was Scorsese's first choice for Frank Costello in The Departed.
I thought De Niro was the first choice to play Frank, but that he couldnt do it because he was working on the The Good Shepard with Damon? Regardless, Jack was the perfect Frank.
And I'm hearing that Pacino is the standout in Irishman even though Bobby and Joe are Oscar-worthy as well.
I think De Niro was supposed to take Martin Sheen's role

Sheen was good in The Departed but the fact we coulda had a combo of Pacino/De Niro, Nicholson/De Niro, or Nicholson/Pacino...
