Seeing “The Irishman” inspired me to look up mob figures, binge the tell all books n watch the movies



It’s amazing n frightening how a secret (well not so secret society nowadays) society of men got together n created a criminal organization that wielded so much power.

@John Reena what are the best books on the mafia/mob you have read about?

Also, in terms of the power they wielded how were they able to accomplish it and could they achieve that type of power nowadays?

There's no way it'll happen again for them.

I've said this before on here. The reason why they got so powerful was because they were smart enough to take advantage of how soft WASP society was when they got here from Italy. Italians were the last huge group of European immigrants. Then Cosa Nostra was duplicated here & tweaked. By way of their culture they were able to be semi absorbed by WASP society here while still retaining their cultural norms.

Being excluded early on, allowed them to create an organization that more or less was tolerated. & they got so big by extortion, too many powerful people were scared to cripple them.

This is just a general statement, but I see people saying "what happened to good cinema, why can't they make movies like this any more?!"

Which is because I've been singing the praises of foreign cinema since SOHH. It's one of the main reasons I was picked to be a mod for this sub-forum.

Now, if you're specifically talking about mob flicks....yeah. Those are mostly dead. And the mob (as depicted in these movies, anyway) is specific to America.
But if your primary source of movies is what Hollywood churns out....

My pick of the year (which could change, haven't seen this movie yet) is "Parasite" by Bong Joon-ho. It did get a very limited theatrical release but it was "out" months prior to that.

Anyway, I'm sort of rambling but cinema is fine. Always has been. Some of you cats just gotta stop acting like the local cinemaplex is the be-all-end-all when it comes to movies.

The issue is that it's a pain in the ass for a cinephile like myself who wants to see these smaller indie and foreign flicks. It sucks having to drive half an hour to the most expensive theater in the state since it's the only theater that plays the indie joints. if they get it at all. Or then I gotta wait like 5 months to rent it on digital. all to make room for captain marvel and other BS

I'd suggest anything by William F. Roemer. He was the fed watching the Outfit in Chicago. I read all his books in high school.
There's a lot of information to digest but he nails down decades worth of the in's and out's.
Chicago was heavily involved in the biggest "conspiracies" in American history.

You can't blame "Captain Marvel" when the vast majority is not going to sit through something like "Parasite". Or this movie, for that matter.

Like it or not major movie chains are a business. They're only ever going to show the movies they feel the general public is interested in.

Relying on theater chains to show you good cinema would be like gauging the quality of music solely on mainstream radio. I suggest you start fukking with torrents.

loved it.
I didn't expect anything to be anywhere close to Goodfellas or Casino but it way for them to all come together and cap it off.

Pesci was fantastic, Pacino was beautifully captivating, you could tell he was enjoying himself. even in the scene in his office where he veered into Pacino overacting mode he pulled it all in with one delightfully delivered line of "...I'm going to prison" and it made it worth it. De Niro was captain of the ship just the vehicle keeping everything moving.

wished Bobby Cannavalle had a bigger part. I would loved to have seen him have more scenes so he could flex his chops a bit in a way that Stephen Graham got to the chance to do with Pacino in a few scenes.

felt like the part of Salerno was just meant for Gandolfini.

weirdly proud of Action Bronson to be honest. to see him spit his first verse on Combat Jack to videos of him cooking in his kitchen to what he's done since then, this is a monumental moment for him.

how distracting were De Niro's eyes by the way ? looked like a White Walker at some point.

now that you've mentioned them, when I was watching The Joker they were the first I thought of when it came to who could've actually made a classic movie out of Phoenix's portrayal.

Joker proved again that movies don't have to be big budget and CGI battles and family friendly to make a lot of money in the theater. It's more than "this is a business".. major studios are buying up screens to play their blockbusters and when they do that it leaves less room for smaller budget movies..

Tarantino has broken down those business practices.. especially PLF joints, IMAX, Dolby, etc.. all of these screens are bought.

It's like the music industry. The music industry for a long time.. radio play was bought and therefore that's what sold.. because the public doesn't hear what might be a better option unless they personally seek it out.
