Ted Cruz said it best, he is a new york republican with"new york" values. He is at the very least moderate regarding social issues.

He's moderate on issues that don't matter really matter anymore. The culture wars of the 1980s are over. Gay marriage is legal and even with a conservative supreme court, Roe v. Wade is likely not going anywhere. The best conservatives can do is try and regulate abortion clinics out of existence with silly "safety" requirements, but apparently even white women don't care.

Trump is not moderate on the only issue that mattered to him getting elected---race. Everything else is just noise.
