More than half a million children, some as young as eight, get married every year in Iran.
Most of these children are girls who marry much older men, sometimes men who are already married and have children their age.
For these girls, marriage means an end to their education, pregnancy in early teens and often divorce before the age of 18. Many come from very poor, large families whose parents have too many mouths to feed.

In Sara's classroom, 21 out of 25 girls got married and quit school.
In an interview with the government-run Iran newspaper, Sara's 29-year-old mother said that she knew her daughter would not have a happy marriage, but her husband was keen to marry Sara off.
She said it was a tradition in their town for girls to get married.
Sara's cousin got married when she was 11, and divorced when she was 15 after her husband became addicted to methamphetamine, aka crystal meth.
In an interview with Iran Online news agency, Masoud, who at 34 married a 12-year-old girl, said that he preferred to marry a young girl because they "listen better, do not have high expectations and would not annoy you by nagging".
"Young girls do not dare to stand up to their husbands, and this means peace," Masoud said, as quoted by Iran Online.
"It was really difficult for me in the beginning. She did not know anything and she was a little clumsy. But she was a smart girl and I managed to train her the way I liked."
However, he said he would not allow his own eight-year-old daughter to get married.
"Maybe she would like to continue her studies and become a doctor," he said.
