Raekwon hinted at him doing his own show about the clan so maybe this is why.

I don't know about since then, but he wanted to do a Wu-movie. He even had Leo on as a producer. He was talking to RZA about it, but RZA opinion was their story was too big for a movie. But by the time he could get movement on it, RZA already had to have signed on for the series.

Dope Divine interview about An American Saga. Mentions why they didn't showcase the drug use of the Wu. But if you look closely, the PCP references are there lol. Like the Protect Ya Neck episode, you don't see RZA roll up but soon as he hits the blunt, the samples become real people in the studio lol.
