So I've been watching a ton of 4K UHD blu-rays with HDR (on my X1S). I'm not impressed. I have an LG 4K OLED and shyt barely looks better than 1080p upscale with HDR. I just watched Mad Max and the HDR was too much. It made the flames look fake as hell.

I watched Sicario and it was alright, but nothing that much more impressive than 1080p upscaled to 4K.

Is 4K UHD really that much of a difference when TVs can upscale incredibly to 4K?

Are you complaining about HDR or 4K, I'm confused

4K. The HDR works well enough with the color contrast. It's just 4K native doesn't seem that much better than 1080p upscaled to 4K
No that's true it's not a big difference, you might see an improvement if you have a large tv, over 65 inches

What's the size of your TV?

It's not gonna be a huge improvement. But if you're watching 2k transfers instead of native 4K transfers, it's gonna be that much harder to spot an improvement. My top ones are:

The Revenant
Pacific Rim
Sicario
Lucy
X-men Apocalypse

Pacific Rim is the only supposed 2k transfer on that list but the HDR on it is so good, it's the best thing to showcase it.

And I disagree that 1080p upscale is almost as good as native 4K. Once you start watching 4K sources, it's hard not to spot 1080p. It's just not as sharp.

Depends on how close you sit to the TV. After a certain distance the benefits of 4K are lost. The optimal viewing distance for a 55'' TV is somewhere around 5 and a half feet. Going up to a 65'' TV gets you an extra foot.

And this

X-Men Apocalypse is godlike on here, especially with Atmos sound:win:

yeah 5.5 feet means if the average adult male were to lie down infront of the TV they shouldn't be sitting any further away from the TV than the top of their head. I'm guessing most people sit further than that from a 55'' TV.

diminishing returns, and it's a format that's compressed. it's not gonna look as crisp as real time rendering

This, the better the source material the better it looks. I have a Samsung 65" KS8000 4K with HDR10, you can definitely tell the difference. To the list above I will add:

Superman VS Batman
Man of Steel
Hitman Agent 47
Battleship

I've shot 4K video and played it back on my set, it is definitely extremely sharp and detailed.
