Like I said I grew up poor. I went to school in the inner city. The Kansas City, Missouri school system was notoriously....eventful, in the 80's and 90's.

Regardless, you had a very good childhood breh. Most people didn't have access to computers in '93.

Fred.

Aw, damn. :ohhh:

I got family out there in Wyandotte and Jackson County. Going out there to see my pop's folks for Christmas, hopefully I'll be able to snag some Gates while I'm there. Good to see some KCMO/KCKS folks along with my Charlotte brehs on here. :blessed:

-Would ask dead beat father on birthdays/christmas (sometimes he came through with a game or two)
-Traded with my friends.
-Beat games at a priveleged friend's home.

That's how I got through it back then because my mom was cheap as fukk. Thank god for the homies, I would have been one bored left out mofo in the late 90's without them. I thought it was going to be another struggle in the sixth gaming gen. but then I got a part time job :whew:

a.) These must be some Cali or NY prices. Sega games here were never $80.
b.) Even if you're young, you must be really, really young to think those tv prices are high. It was basically LED backlighting tech that lowered tv prices. That was right around 2009/2010. Just before that, a 37" for over $1000 was not unusual.
c.) Computers were expensive because until the mid 2000s most people simply didn't have them. When I was in high school, a lot of the white kids had them, but I was like the only black kid I knew that had one in our family. I don't think anyone else in my extended family had them. They just started to blow up amongst the middle class about the time of that ad. But it wasn't until around 2005 when everyone started having them.

Just wait, your children will have something that will ma

Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System was between $60-$80. I remember seeing that price as a little kid at the stores that sold games.

No one I knew shopped at best buy or circuit city for games. They were the sears/jc penney of their time with those inflated prices. If I couldn't buy it, I would either trade or borrow. Trading and borrowing games was BIG in my time from elementary school to early high school. If I was desperate I would rent games from a local video store or blockbuster

my mom bought video games at either bradlees, service merchandise, or electronic boutique

No that interesting. Great Grandmother got us a Compaq in the late 90s and I had to deal with a 56K connection and that shytty PC until 2006.

Finally Pops got us a much better PC and cable internet. :blessed:That feeling of being able to download a full anime series in hours was :mjcry:.
:flattop3: dial up until 2006?

Living on the east coast up north on the outskirts of a major city has its benefits, breh.

The key word is "outskirts" though. The vast majority of inner city schools did not have computers or the internet. Especially not in the early/mid 90's.

Nor did most people. The statistics just don't support that breh. If you had a PC and/or internet in those years you had something less than 1/5 of the U.S. did.

Lol yall remember buying/renting a game from the strength of the Box Art alone?

Some times you get that shyt home and it be NOTHING like what was depicted :mjcry:

And you had to live with it to, I swear I played the fukk out of Superman 64 cuz of this :francis:

Bomberman got me as well :wow:

I bought wwf attitude, off the strength of me not having an N64 to play WCW Revenge, and I swear to god it was the most robotic, bland game ever but I played the hell out of it because that's what I asked for and that's what I got :francis:

That's why its so weird that these days, with all the info, previews, betas, and trailers available b4 a game launches, people STILL be buying this games(day 1 no less) and not no what the hell they getting into.

True stroy fam. My childhood friend who had a OG NES begged his Moms to buy him the X-Men game for it. He thought it was crazy based off the box art & it being X-Men

The_Uncanny_X-Men_Coverart.png

He had me come over so we can play it. Take a look at the gameplay :scust:

Probably the worst game I played as a kid & adult. After 15mins he base lined that game & was mad. Till this day I bring this up to him & he laughs & is disgusted at the same time

Not for nothing I don't ever remember a video game being $80 except Neo Geo shyt which most people didn't have. It's in the pic but I don't recall most games being over $49.99.

I was gonna ask about the Neo Geo at the end of the thread :russ: I've had the console for about 8 years now with about 20 cartridges. I remember playing them in arcades & in the laundromats my mother used to go to when we had to wash clothes. The original arcade ports to home consoles but at at insane price.
