I don't think anyone say Rakim was the first to spit complex rhyme schemes. You had cats like Kool Moe Dee before him. The #1 thing about Rakim is the flow, along with the rhymes, it was the start of a whole new school. KMD was complex and all that but he was still a part of the old school, Treacherous Three and all that he still had some of that early 80s shine to him whereas cats like Ra and KRS, BDK etc were the new generation.
