As someone who was heavily invested (emotionally) in rap at the time, Pac, Big & Nas were the kings of 96. There were some hip hop purists who loved Jay even back then when no one believed in him but he wasn't poppin' even though RD was a good (some say great) album. RD was ahead of its time which is why it has aged like fine wine & added to Jay's lure. But summer of 96 the ppl were listening to It Was Written & All Eyez On Me, even the fugees. Biggie was on hoatus but his presence was still felt w/ features and at the time I didn't know who was the better rapper, him or Nas. But Pac ran the rap world in 96 & Jay was the equivalent of Pusha T back then. Good rapper but overshadowed by the great ones.

I wouldn't be surprised if they rated it lower than that
No way. The Source generally gave good ratings to West Coast artists. In all actuality, it would have got either 4 or 4.5.
There was a period between 91 and 97 where they didn't give any albums (other than Illmatic) five mics. Classic albums from the East and West during that period got 4 or 4.5.
The Source's biggest mistakes were probably Doggystyle getting 4 and Smif N Wessun getting 3.

I wasn't even 10 and I remember can't knock the hustle and ain't no nikka on rap city everyday :yeshrug: and I'm from Alabama

I said something similar in another thread and was told those songs/videos only were played at 4am or weren't played at all.You can tell who actually lived thru that era and who runs with narratives

What nikkas need to know is jayz wasn't popular until 98. All this "jayz said it was a classic" is bs every nikka I know had Rd as thier favorite jay album until blueprint dropped.

Nerds ass hip hop heads and cacs ways trying to downplay jay but the reality is the nikkas influence on rap is undeniable at this point. I swear every rapper from kendrick to jeezy to drake to jay electronica done used a jay line. Which is also the reason he has worked with every popular artist in the last 15 years.

Let's not even mention the flow. So many nikkas bit that shyt it's crazy. But I'll be honest jayz is garbage now. nikka needs to put out a classic asap. He literally trying to compete with drakes at 50.

The funniest part about all this shyt is nikkas acting anybody outside of bone ,master p and pac was popular.

We talking about '96 tho....Jay wasn't even Kurupt status.

As far as other rappers quoting his shyt, it's probably a case of them quoting another nikka, by way of Jay z.

He "pays homage" to so many people, you just never know.

I always said Jay was like the B average student who couldn't shine until the A average students were absent.

By '98, the school was being filled on some special ed shyt....thanks to No Limit/Cash Money and their knock offs.

Jay was able to take advantage. The game was on decline...been declining ever since.

I will say he is the GOAT brand marketer, with a sense of business savvy ever

Kurupt>>>>>>Jay Z.......Might not even be close really

Maybe even globally.Death Row was the hottest label in the world & had just dropped NY, NY.
Dogg Pound, without a doubt, was bigger than Jay-Z in 96. They went double platinum with Dogg Food. Jay didn't sell 500k.
