This is gonna be very very bad brehs. Sampling is pretty much what kept the mixtape game creative and fresh and kept the underground/indie game lively. Almost every CLASSIC mixtape in the past decade has had MAJOR samples on it.

So Far Gone, Kush & OJ, Section80,The Warm Up,R4, Finally Famous 3

All are HEAVILY sampled, some even have straight up beat jacks.

performing freestyles at concerts IS hip-hop, thats always been around

Yes, that has been done. But the freestyles weren't pushed on free mixtapes for everyone to get back then. Artists back then were doing freestyles with the DJ on stage ALONG with other recorded songs. Nowadays, artists are getting big money to perform these "freestyles" over reworked beats without giving credit. The industry allowed that for so long... now these dudes want their cut. You can't blame them for that.

Man, you don't have to explain it anymore... these dudes don't get it. They really think calling it a free mixtape means that no money is being seen from it so the old dudes should be quiet. They just want their free music regularly.

I don't agree with a lot of what you say, but you do know your music biz stuff and I gotta give props for that.

oh you think? that's exactly what their problem is. if you swapped out Currensy or some rapper these guys worship, their tune would change quick.

Curren - Get It Ya Self (Ft Deelow) - YouTube

if Pete Rock tried to sue Curren$y for 10 million for sampling smooth sailing (which was already a sample itself) would ya'll be in here talkin bout "well he did profit off it"

:mindblown:

No, you wouldn't
In the original thread I posted vids of Wiz, Cole, Wayne and a couple others performing freestyles at concerts and having actual videos for the songs and they said that's different.

Why do you think Drake got sued over "Best I Ever Had"? Why do you think the mixtape was cut down to an EP to sell with all the beat jacks on it gone?

Section.80 was an independent album which means he got those samples taken care of... otherwise he couldn't have sold it without getting sued.

You know what... never mind. Just do what you do.

Dudes are not talking about non-hiphop artists suing rappers for mixtape joints. We are talking about hiphop dj's who jack samples without clearing them, suing another rapper for doing the same shyt but not selling it.

But most of us are thinking objectively, yes we want our free music. Not that we don't download music that's on sale as well. But we want music to keep on dropping in a high frequency. Cause the major market is not as fresh as it once was, we've even gone whole months without a major label album dropping. The problem with that is that major labels are not dropping major albums cause people are not buying albums. So in the end it all falls on the consumers. I think 360 deals might increase the frequency though, cause the labels will eat.

Guess what... those dudes got away with it. Sorry the new artists didn't... I'm not blaming these new artists. I actually blame the industry for letting this practice go on for as long as it did. Free mixtapes were allowing artists to cut out producers (and to a certain extent DJs) if the songs were beat jacks/remade songs and lower their costs a LOT in order to stay relevant. So I'm at a show doing songs over tweaked Pete Rock beats getting 30k a show while Pete Rock at home chilling. Huh?

Y'all can't have it both ways. If everyone has to eat... why cut out the folks who made it possible? If Finesse never cleared the sample... then it's on him to prove Mac used the same sample flip... if he did... then Mac should have given the man his props which he FAILED to do. I don't know why folks are ignoring that.

That's why I say it's better to just flip the sample your own way, make sure the originators of the sample are cool with it, then proceed on. If you can't afford it, then get your money right before you rap. Period.
