I often wonder this too. This was well before white people rapping had become widely mainstream. Sure there was beastie boys, but they played instruments and half their music was punk rock (their biggest hit having only 4 bar rock verses)...then this white guy spitting full rap verses with no rock influence comes in with the dre cosign
nah not really

u had Vanilla Ice, House of Pain with a big hit record Jump Around... you had Marky Mark.., Snow wit the reggae/hiphop.

and 3rd Base they wasnt mainstream but every hiphop head knew of them

Everyone was already aware of Eminem from his battles and underground work. We knew Em was nice already. I also knew Dre had a huge draw on his hands.
this

i heard about him from somebody in Detroit that seen him perform around maybe 97 and he was telling me how nice this white boy was

and the Source had him in Unsigned Hype in 1998

i remember reading them rhymes they quoted and knew he was gonna be a problem

not to mention the Brian Austin Green types, Young Black teenagers, there were a lot of white rappers before Em made it big.

you coulda just said "i guess i remembered it wrong" instead of trying to spin the lie in a different way

He's not lying or wrong though. MTV brought it back around '97, that version ended around 2000. There was another YO! MTV Raps in '08. Like he said it's existed on and off since it ended in '95.

Japan, but from the 989
I heard a little of Em's music before he got signed to Dre because my homeboy (who used to rap) would talk about this white boy who is about to blow up in the D. A couple rap battles and rumors and shyt, then boom. My name is....the rest is history. Dre made a smart move on that.

I was a kid when Dre signed him but I remember hearing all the old heads playing his underground shyt and SSLP along with the Chronic 2001 and being like "who is this weird sounding dude hes kinda nice?" I remember in middle school all the mexican kids would be singing his verse from Forgot About Dre and it stuck with me, once I saw the video I was like THATS WHO THIS IS? Anyways I kept up with his name and ended up stanning the nikka ever since because he sounded so different but great at the same time

You were a kid, it's okay. We all have music that we are ashamed that we listened to. I was a fan of the backstreet boys. Lol

I was kind of relieved years later to find out that Nas actually wrote "Gettin' Jiggy With It". That was my jam as a shorty. :whew::stylin:
