Looks like Ward will be needed

sherms injury could be lingering but he should be ready for the start of season

kwaun injury is a leg and the fact that he had to be helped off the field is reaally bad :(

ward is injured himself :francis:

Safties

Jaquiski Tartt -

2014 draft pick from Samford. Tartt has developed into one of the better safeties in the league. He has incredible speed and athleticism and he hits like a linebacker almost like a young Donte Whitner. What has impressed me more is his ability to play coverage. He has become much better at it since being drafted and is required in Salehs defense to be versatile. He should be a long time niner.

Grade: A-

Adrian Colbert -

Didn't know he and Marquise Goodwin were cousins. Not surprising as he has the hereditary speed genes. I know he has limited tape in college but it still amazes me how this guy flew under the radar to the 7th round. Well our gain. He has great change of direction skills and is probably the best natural free safety we have had in recent history. If I had to pencil in a weakness he is a so-so tackler at best not because he doesn't hit hard but morr sk he tends to go for the kill shot but in most cases the free safety is more important in coverage it's difficult to take down a guy in open space as the last line of defense. But he should continue to improve his 2nd year and I'm ok with him as a starter.

Grade: B+

Jimmie Ward -

Though listed a a safety. Ward is a true defensive back. His ability to line up anywhere in the defensive backfield keeps him a valuable member of the team who could possibly get a long term contract despite his injury history and mercurial play. I've seen him look like a pro-bowler and I've seen him look like we should have traded him years ago. But he manages to stay in part because the team values versatility and Ward is a jack of all trades.

Grade: B-

Chancellor James -

Provides good depth at safety but his true value is in special teams where shines among the teams best players. Despite that he is young and can still improve

Grade: C+

Anton Exum Jr. -

Former 6th rounder from the Vikings. Exum is primarily a special teams player.

Grade: D

Marcell Harris -

Draft and stash safety in the 6th round of the 2018 draft. Was seen as a 3rd or 4th round talent due to his athleticism. Its low risk to do this since safety is stacked.

Grade: INC.

Terell Williams Jr.

An intriguing prospect at 6'4 215 pounds. He comes from Houston with a very good senior year with 66 tackles and 4 INTs. I think they stash him on the practice squad at worse but he could sneak onto the main roster ousting someone like Dante Exum or Chancellor James. He was a free safety in college but he's clearly a strong safety prospect. Time will tell.

Grade: D

Unit Analysis:

I think this unit is very solid. There are 2 if not 3 guys who are starter quality and the depth is young and athletic. I think our defensive backfield is fine in general. I'm more concerned about the front 7.

Unit Grade: B+

Special Teams

Kyle Nelson -

Good longsnapper, rarely if ever bobbled a snap.

Grade: B+

Robbie Gould -

Veteran kicker. Robbie Gould is an all pro kicker. Having completed 87% of his kicks in his career, he is deadly accurate even if he doesn't have the strongest boot. Nk need to though the weather in Santa Clara is usually moderate and the offense is effective enough where he doesn't need to make miracles happen to win games.

Grade: A-

Jeffe Locke - Signed this year to compete with Bradley Pinion. Locke is better at kickoffs though and he is more than likely his replacement.

Bradley Pinion

A young punter. Pinion has huge boot but his lack of accuracy and distance makes me wonder why the team let Andy Lee go. Andy Lee is still considered one of the best in the NFL.

Grade: C-

Unit Analysis:

This unit is solid overall and with improved performance by the special teams unit under the Shanahan coaching staff. They should help the team get prime position and keep opponents field long. As well as make game changing field goals.

Unit Grade: B

Im anxious to see Buckner used at DE. I think he can be as good or better than Calias and it allows Solomon to play 3 tech like he should've been doing last year instead of being at Leo

honestly they should ditch mitchell next year and just play buckner and sol inside. buckners talent will allow him to play at DE, but hes a MUCH better fit at DT in 4-3

Is sol even big enough to play inside on first and second down?

hes good at stopping the run, he should eat next to buckner. he might have to bulk up but hes completely wasted at DE spot. he sucks at rush-oriented DE/LEO, thats not his position
