Quick Notes From Last Night:
- Rose era starts with a win. RJ immediately looked like a bigger focal point and Frank pushed Payton to a secondary role by playing really well off the bench. The team as a whole looked more motivated which happens with a FO change (yall may remember the run after Phil came in) but the young guys graduating to bigger roles would be a concrete shift...especially RJ being the main cog we run through.
- And RJ paid up with 27, 5 and 5 with over 50% from the field and 3/8 from three. The kid balled out every which way. He made some really nice assists, knocked down jumpers from three and midrange, then showed some really nice finishing. I know we heard a lot about his lack of wiggle, but a little craft can go a long way. For RJ, it showed up in how he gathered during his drives of all things. His strength is wild, so he can pick his gather to either create space, finish through or finish around defenders. When he's got downhill momentum, he's just a ton to deal with...also, the allstar break seems to have given him second legs.
- On that focal point note the other guys who were main cogs all season didn't look so great. Randle actually beasted on the boards but was inefficient as hell (5/14 FGAs) and stood out especially late forcing things. Payton ceded a ton of time to Frank and didn't look particularly locked in. He played a solid game but struggled to score.
- Harkless and Taj are more my kinda vets. They did the extra work and little things. Harkless' constant cutting through the lane is a legitimately refreshing site and he got easy finishes all night. Taj has just been steady and solid, he outworked the smaller Rockets for 10 boards in 24 minutes.
- Frank's aggression was fun to watch, especially that he kept shooting even while the three ball just wouldn't fall. He moved the ball really well though and his defense was impressive as hell, especially when he paired with Harkless to run around the wings. The ball handling stood out a lot too. He said Rivers down on skates at one point and did the James Harden step back three move to James Harden...bricked it but the ball handling was there.
- Mitch had 12 and 13 but was better than those numbers even show. First off he did that in 24 minutes and second, without getting a single block he managed to close down interior finishing for chunks of game at a time.
- Bench vets played well. Portis seems like he's been having one really hot quarter a game and frustrates me for most of the rest. But his numbers lately don't lie and he's been better than Randle post ASB to be honest. I still would rather just go with Iggy at this point. Ellington looked like the pre-Knicks uniform Ellington with clutch shooting and knock down jumpers whenever he got an inch.
- Knox flashed some things offensively but couldn't get it going. The numbers won't show it but he moved with a lot more purpose and confidence than in his more aimless performances.
