I do this forecast shyt every fukking year..... so why stop now? Shout out to @storyteller and @Youhadasparkwhenustarted for their FA suggestions the last few days. I’ve been slacking on watching other teams for their FA and had to catch up.

:francis:

We are still a year away from being a year away............ from competing to make the playoffs.

Looking at the roster based on what they have and their needs this is my best case scenario.

Coaching
Hire HC Kenny Atkinson, he is a development coach, lives in the area, was a CAA client, and fukk the Nyets off of principle. Keep Mike Miller as the associate HC to help with team defense.

Draft Haliburton with Knicks pick, Grab Otaru with the Clippers

Current Roster Moves
Keep Dotson and Taj defense as two way role players

Waive/cut Elfrid, Wayne, Reggie, Moe, Trier, and Porter

Free Agency
Go for lesser known young FA’s like Christian Wood, and Josh Jackson

Get Joe Harris for both need (shooting), and because he can be a vet in a Kenny Atkinson system

The 2020 Forecast
Move Randle to the bench for a scoring punch, but really he is there for trade bait/cap space purposes. Keep Taj for the same reason and veteran presence.

Set up a system for youth development, runs modern offense based on PnR, 3pt shots, and screens to create shot opportunities

play every team hard, give the youth opportunities to develop, and hope to hit again in the next draft

Frank/ Haliburton/ DSJ
RJ/ Frank/ Dotson
Harris/ Jackson/ Dotson/
Wood/ Knox/ Randle
Mitch/ Oturu/ Taj

This team can play in Atkinson’s system.

-3 pt shooting would be improved by Harris’s addition.

-Wood is a versatile 3&D PF with both range offensively, speed for defense and transition, and size to rebound alongside Mitch

-RJ could play the role of Russell as a ball handler scorer. He needs his touches and having more two guys who have legit 3 pt range around him in Haliburton and Harris will help

-Knox played In and excelled in a screen heavy offense in college. I think he would do well in atkinson’s system

-Frank, RJ, and Haliburton would be a very scary trio of guard defensively. Especially if the plan is to have two of them in all game with Dotson waiting to come in as needed

-Harris is a lowkey very gettable shooter, probably for what less than what we are paying Portis. I wouldnt have thought the Knicks had a chance before, but Atkinson system/development regime basically made his career and Nyets are capped out even if they let Allen walk. Acquiring him in free agency would be a wise way to show support for their new HC.

-Oturu makes sense as a Mitch backup center because they need to move him to start center and should look to get good talent on a cheap deal for once Taj expires.

The Knicks would have about 20-30 Mil (dependent on draft pick salaries) in 2021 to add another piece in 2021’s better FA before a decision on Frank would need to be made. Plus this 2020 roster while not a playoff team should play better and have some sort of identity. Also who knows maybe they get lucky with one of their two 1st round draft picks and get an above avg SF in 2021 to make the cypher complete.

I like it. My preference is still to chase Ingram hard and then make moves after that decision is reached. But Harris and Wood would be a really good pair of reasonably priced offseason acquisitions. I've liked Haliburton for a while too, so i don't hate the pick but I'm having a tough time projecting where we'll end up picking and it will play a big role in who I think we select. I love the idea of Harris and Atkinson setting off the system too. This is the type of measured approach to an offseason that I would prefer overall. We get a developmental coach (a real one) and add good fitting players that boost the overall talent of the roster.

My biggest fear is that recent evidence has been when new regimes come in, they look to make a splash. Pills lined up KP trades; Phil dealt Chandler for Calderon; Greenwald got Chandler; and then Walsh made the splash via D'antoni and trading away Crawford/Zbo. I hope Rose doesn't feel compelled to make a big shift. Stick to the youth, bring in talent that makes sense and be patient about making the splash when the move is right. I foresee the Knicks inquiring about a lot of players this offseason who would cost a lot of assets.

Yeah I agree with you about them wanting to make a splash. The rumors they are looking at CP3 and Derozan, definitely feeds that view. It isn’t the end of the world but they would have to jettison Randle now, whereas I think it’s better they hold their nose and do it in a better FA of 2021. More teams are going to be on the verge of losing their PF in 2021 so Randle being a under contract until 2022 makes him more valuable as well.

Hopefully Rose learns that one of the reasons his predecessors all failed was they always came in looking to make a name for themselves or show how much better they were than their predecessors. Rose just avoiding the media..... hopefully that is a sign he doesn’t want to do the same thing.

Hypothetical Trade Scenario:

Let’s say we get the third pick, would you trade 3 and Randle for the Bulls pick if they fall to say the 7th and Lauri?

Yes, but it doesn't go through until Edwards is drafted 1 or 2. 7 is right at my cut off btw.
Edwards, LaMelo, Haliburton, Maxey, Deni, Obi, Cole, Killian...I keep the pick for Edwards and maybe LaMelo (still torn on it) ...Haliburton would make me think twice too.

I don’t like doing these hypotheticals until the lottery. In that scenario I think Haliburton is available at 7 so I would do it

I would rather keep the 3rd pick which could be melo, edwards or wiseman than trade down.

I don’t see why people want lauri so bad. Dude is always injured, hasn’t played more than 60 games in 3yrs. We clown KP for being soft, but Lauri is softer than KP and a worse shooter, he 7ft tall and barely shoots above 40% and grabs 6 boards

The 3rd pick is more valuable to me than the 7th pick/lauri. I’m not even sure if the knicks are looking to trade julius, and if we are, I’m sure we can easily find a trade.
